LOL. What a list?! - My Dream Job Is Not

[ In Reply To ..]
I certainly don't want to be a skin-care specialist and apply makeup and creams to other people. I've had it up to here with flaky acquaintances I practically had to run from because they were "Financial Examiners" hungry for business. Yes, we would all love to be athletic trainers like Bob & Jillian. Home health aides? That's fine for those who have the gift of providing hands-on health care. Network Systems Analysts are losing jobs to overseas workers as we speak. Funds have been cut for biomedical engineers, biochemists, medical scientists, and biophysicists and many of them are looking for work in other fields.

I think we're lucky not to be on that list.

The point being??? - Redpen

OK, let's put this into perspective. The jobs on that list are projected to increase, but are they really jobs that any of us might want? (Certainly, if they are, then you should go for it!)

All of these require college or graduate degrees in traditionally difficult fields, so they're out of the question for most. It's also incredibly difficult for women to get and keep jobs in these fields--you'd be surprised how many coders came from these fields:

Biomedical Engineers 72% -- Graduate degree in engineering and biomedicine

Medical Scientists 40% -- Graduate degree in biochemistry, pharmacology, etc.

Biochemists, Biophysicists 37% -- Graduate degree in biochemistry and biophysics

These might be more attainable for the average person:

Network Systems Analysts 53% -- College degree in computer science, possibly graduate degree

Financial Examiners 41% -- College degree in accounting, probably with an MBA afterward

Certainly, if you can swing this one, you should:

Physician Assistants 39% -- College degree plus possibly some graduate work

You have to BE athletic for this one, but it's probably a fine job if you are:
Athletic Trainers 37%

Personal-service work:
Skin-Care Specialists 38%

Minimum wage, horrible work:
Home Health Aides 50%
Personal, Home-Care Aides 46%

If you continue reading in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, you'll see that coding is listed as a high-demand field.

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR
Apr 10, 2012

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? I live in a rural area and there are advertisements for registered/accredited coders at medical facilities, but I'm afraid of spending all that time and money on schooling only to not be able to find a job. Any information/insight w ...

Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...

MT To Coding
Sep 27, 2010

I've been an MT for going on 8 years now, and I've been throwing around the idea of taking a coding class. I would really like to have something else to fall back on, as it seems that MT'ing is going more and more to VR. There's a local coding class that begins in January for $1700, but I wanted to get some feedback of current coders before signing up. Is the demand for coders still fairly high? Is it hard to find a job as a newbie, even with already having experience in the ...
