The doctor dictated that the patient has a family member who is "very retarded". I feel that is rather inappropriate, would you leave it or change it to something else (what) ?

This is not a situation where the doctor mispronounced a drug name and you are fixing it to match the correct spelling of the drug name. This is perception of a life circumstance the physician is re-stating as stated by a family member (it is that person's perception - exactly - that needs to be portrayed). Worlds of difference here.

You do not change the doctor's dictation because you don't like a word. It's not your call. You're not the doctor. Transcribe what the doctor says or find a new profession.

The word "retarded" somewhere along the line became politically incorrect. It's a real word and means something real, as in severely mentally academically challenged due to perhaps brain malfunction.

It is NOT a derogatory comment, except for the fact that someone decided it's politically incorrect--and also, people tended to abuse the word to mean for someone they don't like. If a family member said it, put it in quotes.
