hyphenating compound adjectives - Sooner

Compound adjectives:  Half-a-pack-a-day smoker...does this look right???

You are correct, but a bunch of hyphens sort of doesn't look good. I would do half-pack-a-day smoker. It's a little better, anyway. OR, if it's in the middle of a sentence, 1/2-pack-a-day smoker. Fewer characters in that so it looks better.

It is correct unless you type per BOS, then you would - sm

1/2, and personally I would leave out the first "a", so 1/2-pack
