is if you misheard the one used and used the other. Ask them what the difference is.

Sorry! My brain is still trying to recover from the holidays hahaha
Dilation is an adjective: The state of being dilated.
Dilatation: The action of dilating.
Both are nouns, and they are synonyms. - LK

According to Stedman's Medical Dictionary, they are synonyms and can be used interchangeably. I'd be curious to hear what that QA person has to say is the difference between the two, because there isn't one.
not synonyms always - tired of winter

Dilation is a state of something like "dilated cervix"
Dilatation is the act of dilating something with an instrument etc...
Sometimes they can be interchanged but other times they cannot. It depends on the sentence and how it is used.
What reference tells you this? - LK

Both the BOS and Stedman's medical dictionary state they are synonymous and can be used interchangeably. That's good enough for me. Basically, I use whatever is dictated. I've never been questioned on this, and if I were I would point to Stedman's and the BOS as my backup.
3 different companies - tired of winter

have told me this. I was told by different QA from 3 different companies on how to use these two as I have always mixed them up. One said the dictionary may say they are interchangeable but a GOOD transcriptionist knows the difference. Guess I wasn't a "good" transcriptionist lol....after being told that it just kind of stuck so now I use one as a verb (shrug)
They ARE the same and interchangeable--SM - CM

It's the same with disk and disc ... they're interchangeable, yet some places are dead said against using one or the other in certain circumstances. They're displaying their lack of knowledge, not yours. They're the same.
dilation/dilatation - see message

No matter how you slice it, dilatation/dilation is never a verb. You cannot conjugate it.
The verb would be dilate.
Regardless, they are synonyms.
QA is not infallible. - LK

They are sometimes wrong. My approach to QA is that if they tell me something is wrong, I want a reference that backs it up. Just because they say it doesn't make it so. They make mistakes just like everyone does.

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip Mar 13, 2012Two words that come up often for questioning. These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting. Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager, girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. VR Versus SR Feb 20, 2010I am not familiar with VR and have never used it, but I understand that there is a difference between voice recognition (VR) and speech recognition (SR). I am told the difference is that with VR the program has to be trained because it goes by voice only, sort of like us getting used to different dictators when we start a new account.
SR is supposedly different in that it goes by speech alone, meaning I guess, just the actual words dictated and is not affected by voice differences.

BNP Versus BMP Jun 08, 2010Hi, I have a dictator going over the patient's hypertension. At the end of the section he says (BMP/BNP) was unremarkable. CCA Versus CCS Dec 20, 2011I have a question for you coders out there. I decided I want to make a career change from MT to coding. My question is, is it realistic to expect to pass the CCS exam after completing Andrews or other online schools? ER Versus ED Aug 12, 2012When physician clear dictates "emergency deparment" why does ASR continue to put "emergency room?" A Versus An Mar 14, 2014I know when in doubt defer to what the physician prefers. But suddenly we have one doctor replacing "an" with "a," and is just doesn't sound right. I was always taught to us a when followed by a consonant and an when followed by a vowel.
