Website for Medical Equipment spelling - gksc

Posted: Mar 21, 2013

Can anyone recommend some sites for getting the correct spelling of equipment?  The manufacturers and medical suppliers usually use all caps to emphasize their product.  http://www.medilexicon.com/medicalequipment.php  Something like this site that is more comprehensive.

For instance, ExoSeal.  Googling gives EXOSEAL, Exoseal, exoseal, ExoSeal.  My Stedman's medical spellchecker says Exoseal is correct, but after several minutes of researching I believe it is actually ExoSeal.  I used KB Benchmark and it was not even found there.

So, I am looking for sites I can go to and immediately get the correct way supplies are supposed to be transcribed.

I don't know of a centralized website - research

for medical equipment devices. I usually do a Google search to find the manufacturer of a particular device, then go to the manufacturer's website to authenticate.

As to appropriate upper/lower case usage, I believe it is in BOS (someone will correct me if I am wrong) that you cap the initial letter, then use lower case for the rest of the word to improve reading clarity. If this is indeed the case, that would explain why you could not document upper/lower case usage in Benchmark.

Because I don't have to please a QA staff, I use the trademarked wording from the manufacturer's websites.

Here's a definitive site...SM - Old Anon

Try the FDA site, www.FDA.GOV. They have drugs, medical devices/procedures, vaccines, blood, biologics, plus more. Hopefully, the agency that approves these things would have the correct spelling and capitalization/style.

I like the FDA site, but regarding devices/appliances - research

I have found that the FDA uses all-caps in the spelling of this category, which does not help in the OP in documenting upper/lower case spelling on these items.
FDA site does not work for me either - gksc

They have most names in all caps.

I never thought I'd say this, but a dictator can do too much spelling.  There is one at my company who spells out every single medication.  While this is normally helpful, this doctor's pronounciation leaves a little to be desired.  It would be much simpler for him to just say the name of the medication.  ...

I'm not sure what got into Dr. Knucklehead's brain tonight, but he's spelling words like pannus, Trileptal, anasarca (which he spelled wrong).  It's bad enough he's doing it as often as he is because he's completely messing up the voice recognition for his drafts, but he has spelled pannus every freaking time he has said it. The patient has cellulitis below her pannus, so the word is coming up a lot in this report.   I have one more hour to go and then a ...
