Question about fragment...Is this one? - SM

Posted: Sep 25, 2010

Is, "Delivered the infant over a midline incision" a sentence fragment because "I" is left out? I am on a verbatim account, but we are not to use sentence fragments. Dictator clearly does not say "I," and I am wondering whether I should add that in? I have only been working for a month and am feeling a little confused now. I was docked some points last week for leaving the I in this type of report out, but yesterday I was not docked, so now I am feeling helpless. Thank you!

Verbatim and no sentence fragments are an oxymoron - Happy MT Robin

Doctors speak in sentence fragments half the time.

If it is a verbatim account, I would type it exactly as he dictates it. The sentence is not technically a fragment, because the I is implied (I think).

However, if you have to choose between verbetim and no fragments, I'd go with verbatim. The next time QA dings you for one or the other, ask them which of those two account specifics takes priority and make sure you get the answer from them in writing.

Verbatim, but...accounts - Good grief

I agree completely with Robin's suggestion. The account is either verbatim (type exactly as dictated) or it isnt (make judicial edits, like correcting sentence fragments). It cannot be both. They need to clarify that issue for you.

I think one thing we MTs should do is organize a nationwide "Type-As-Dictated Day." That would encourage them to think before they ask for verbatim dictation.

I agree with y'all...thank you - SM

I totally agree, and it is very confusing. My account instructions say not to add words, change words, or delete words, but yet if the doctor says, for example, "a analogy," we are supposed to type "an analogy." I mean, WHICH is it????????? Verbatim means VERBATIM...it is very frustrating! Thank you, girls.
