Left hip replacement - placing a tibial strut with - Dahl-Miles cable please sm

Posted: Jun 07, 2011

I have always typed as Dall-Miles but this ortho doc spells this out.  Maybe doing it incorrectly all along?

Dall-Miles - deb

Tessier Surgical Word book and Stedman's have it as Dall-Miles so I would stick with that. Doc's can't spell as well as us!

Dall-Miles - cable

Dahl-Miles cable - Is this California

Is this by chance from a California hospital (St. J)?

The dictator is probably just reading off the charge sheet of what instruments were ordered.

You cannot always assume that the dictator is clueless – especially if they spell the words.  Since the dictator went to the trouble of spelling it, it could very well be that other transcriptionists have changed it to “Dall” and they are getting tired of seeing it wrong in the records.  Since Billing is the name of the game, the name used for billing should be exactly the same as the name used in the report, or the claim may be rejected by the insurance company.

If it is a verbatim account, I would transcribe as dictated/spelled.

If not, I usually send the report  to the client with the “common” spelling with an Email to QA asking them to double check with the facility to make sure they do not actually have something new we may not be aware of yet or a preferred spelling.

Dall-Miles Cable System
In 1985, the world̢۪s first multi-filament orthopaedic cable, Dall-Miles was introduced by Stryker as a means of providing fixation for trochanteric reattachment procedures. Representing a single system for bridging reconstruction and trauma needs, the Dall-Miles Cable System continues to set the clinical standard in cable fixation not only for trochanteric reattachment, but also for prophylactic and supplementary cerclage fixation with plates and screws. With more than 100 published clinical papers demonstrating clinical successes, no other multi-filament cable system offers the reassurance of so much clinical experience.
