Finger injury - ortho word help, please - STUCK

Posted: Jun 15, 2010

Pt has injured her right index finger and doctor dictates the following:

I feel that both s/l EC and EIP are intact today on my exam.

I cannot find reference to the EC and possibly the EIP.  THANKS for any and all help!!!

Finger/Ortho question - Kay

He may be saying "DIP and PIP are intact today on my exam."

Try as I may... - still stuck

...I cannot get him to say DIP and PIP. I clearly hear EC and EIP but cannot find a reference to such.

EIP and EDC maybe - see message - Janie

Did the dictator say anything about surgery?  Does the following sound possible?

extensor indicis proprius (EIP)

extensor digitorum communis (EDC)

Loss of long-, ring-, and small-finger MCP joint extension is usually treated by transfer of the extensor indicis proprius (EIP) to both the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) and extensor digitorum communis (EDC) of the ring finger and side-to-side suture of the long-finger EDC to the intact index-finger EDC.  If the EIP is the only remaining extensor to the index finger, a flexor digitorum sublimis (FDS) tendon may be used to motor the ring- and small-finger MCP joint extension in place of the EIP.  Although one of the radial wrist extensors (preferably the extensor carpi radialis longus) can be considered as a motor tendon in this circumstance, it is often not long enough to reach the distal stumps of the ruptured tendons and does not have sufficient excursion to restore normal MCP joint motion.

It could possibly be the DIP or PIP joints. Those are the joints in the fingers. I don't know what EC might be. I work for an orthopedic clinic and haven't heard of anything that sounds like EC, but I could be wrong.
