Error for typing Crohn's; said it should be Crohn disease - Suz
Posted: Nov 26, 2010
Has anyone heard of this? I used to work in GI, altho it has been 10 years. I was counted off for this error.
My company started doing this, too. Ridiculous. - Doesnt affect patient care! -sm

I think the reason all the MTSOs are suddenly counting off for putting
<< 's >> on words that have them is, they want to pay us less.
That is correct...Crohn...not Crohn's. - sm

You should know this by now if you have been at it for 10 years. It is in any medical dictionary!
excuse me... - not nice

We all know that BOS goes back and forth on the possessive forms.
However, my dear, in my medical dictionary - and in virtually every scholarly article I can find - it is, and has always been, Crohn's disease.

Actually, BOS has nothing to do with this particular issue.

This was not an issue before BOS scrambled the message.
No need for snottiness........it may be in dict. as - Crohn, but nothing is wrong with using an apostrop

Crohn's not Crohn - Grammar

Maybe you need to look at some reference books. The Radiology Word Book under disease lists Crhon's. So how many years have you been at it? I don't care if you have "been at it" for 60 years, changing grammar rules is stupid. Do you have children? Hopefully you have some in middle school and they have "been at it" for 7 or 8 years. Tell them when they write there report they can write "I went to John house". When they have points deductated tell them to respond by saying "No my mother is a medical transcripionist and she has "been at it" a long time AND SHE SAYS POSSESSIVE'S DON'T MATTER!!!! SINCE YOU WERE SO RUDE MAYBE THIS COMMENT WILL CLEAN YOUR CLOCK!!!!!
Crohn versus Crohn's disease - explanation inside

The AAMT/AHDI started this silly rule of dropping the possessive on things like Crohn's or Parkinson's when they came out with their BOS 2nd edition.
But the other poster is correct, virtually everybody, in every scholarly article, the NIH, Mayo Clinic, dictionary, etc., these are still listed and spoken of WITH the possessive.
And evidently, from what I heard, there were just too many physicians complaining that when they dictated "Crohn's disease," the MTs were typing it as "Crohn disease."
So, the AAMT/AHDI did a complete turnaround on this when they came out with their BOS 3rd edition (which is the most current edition). And they now say that it is okay to type the possessive form when that is how the dictator says it.
So the bottom line I guess is which BOS does your company follow? If it's the BOS 2, yes, you have to drop the possessive even if dictated. If it's the BOS 3, then no, you type it as dictated. Personally, my company follows the BOS 2, but I still type it exactly as dictated. If the dictator says Crohn's disease, then that's exactly what they want...not Crohn disease.
BOS 2 says possessive is okay if dictated - Daisy

BOS 2, page 176:
It is important to note, however, that use of the possessive form remains an
acceptable alternative if dictated and/or if indicated as the preference by
employer or client.
In awkward constructions, such as when the noun following the eponym is
omitted, the possessive form becomes preferred.
The patient’s husband suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Wow...amazing that I have never heard it before - Suz

Really shocked actually. Not one radiologist that I have typed has ever said it without the 'S'. Glad I asked you all. He did dictate Crohn's btw but I was still counted off for it.
You will be counted off for it if the facility has - requested no possessives. NM

It depends on the company. If they specify no apostrophe (whether it be client preference or their preference) then don't use an apostrophe. Rules are rules and are there for a reason, if none other than continuity. Bottom line, it's what they want. It's their playground, if you're going to play there, follow the rules.

This company has in the account specs ADHI BOS... not which edition or anything. nothing about possessive or not. Just that they follow ADHI BOS. Like I wrote before, I've typed Crohn's for years...have never heard it any other way. Obviously I'm out of the loop when it comes to whatever 'book of style'.
the problem is... - sm

The people in QA do not know, either. It is their job to ding you, and they will - for no good reason.
I would suggest that you respond to them by explaining that the possessive style is reaffirmed in BOS 3, and kindly ask them to reverse the error they charged you with.
Ask QA to let you know what they prefer - in writing - and let them know you will be happy to follow their recommendation. If you are dinged in the future (which no doubt you will be, since QA is as arbitrary as the BOS), you will have documentation of their preferred style.
Crohn disease. Although you will hear LOTS of dictators say Crohn's. You need to type it the correct way, no matter what they say. You run into this a lot with names of diseases like this. Same with Parkinson as another example.
oh, not so sure about that. BOS is an outine for me, the doctor trumps that. - not getting in trouble for ANYONE. (no message)
The doctor does not trump the facilitiy's wishes 99% - sm

of the time. We have doctors who specifically say I want such-and-such, we type it the way the facility wants and send them a note regarding the doctor's wishes and they handle it from there. The doctor does not sign you paycheck remember.
not where I work. but you would not know that. - would you? NM

There is a reason "most companies" do it like this: by imposing frivolous, counterintuitive rules, it enables QA to ding you, thus dropping your QA percentage, thus keeping you locked into a lower rate of pay.
We have AHDI to thank for this. Our industry can benefit from a consistent, intelligent Book of Style, but when changes are made to the BOS that are frivolous and counterintuitive, it does nothing to advance the integrity of the industry, and only benefits the employers.
Lastly, "most companies" does not mean "most transcriptionists": most physicians, scientists, researchers, and academicians do NOT conform to frivolous changes that are made - and then reversed - each time a new edition of the BOS comes out.
THE NEW MT BOOK OF STYLE - Grammar

No, you are right!! The "powers that be" feel like because they are decision makers at AAMT and Book of Style that they get to change the rules of grammar, i.e. possesive. I got counted off for the same thing. For years it was Baker's cyst now it is Baker cyst. Just because you are doing medical transcription it should not give you the right to alter the English and grammar rules that have stood for years. (Doctor's who understand the English language and grammar rules should immediately terminate any service that does it, I DON'T CARE WHAT THE AAMT BOOK OF STYLE MGR AND HER Ph.D. have to say about it--I can assure you if she went back to school and put it in her thesis she would/should be given an F!!!!!) It's amazing how people keep a job i.e. NOT DOING ANYTHING PRODUCTIVE JUST MAKING STUPID RULES. When the song came out years ago THAT JUST MY BABY DADDY--ALMOST ALL AMERICA STARTED TALKING ABOUT EBONICS AND HOW WRONG IT WAS. SO WHAT IS THIS TRANBONICS? (like I said they apparently are trying to do the same thing as BILL GATES i.e Windows 95, 98, 2000,ME, XP, VISTA, WINDOWS 7. You, like me, just understand possessive.

Could someone please help me? According to the AAMT Book of Style, Is it correct to add a plural on the names of diseases or syndromes, like Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease, Baker's cyst, or should it simply be written as Alzheimer disease, etc. Thanks so much if someone can help me out. ...
