Crohn disease or Crohn's disease?

Crohn disease if the word "disease comes after it" but Crohn's if it stands alone. - x

I know you are correct - according to the BOS, but...

I have never once heard a doctor say "Crohn disease", they always say "Crohn's disease. Adding to the confusion, I myself am afflicted with this and all the printed information that has been given to me says "Crohn's disease", all the prescription medication patient inserts say "Crohn's disease", not to mention the NIH website and the National "Crohn's Disease" Foundation and even on pharmaceutical company commercials on TV, they all say "Crohn's disease." Go figure.

Crohn's disease is the proper term - if the doctor says Crohn's - add the word disease and type out:
Crohn's disease
OBXconsumer, - I think you are missing the point.

Crohn's is the proper term if it stands alone, no need to add the word "disease" if it is not dictated. Likewise, "Alzheimer's" is correct if it stands alone but if followed by the word "disease", it should be "Alzheimer disease", which for some reason sounds okay but "Crohn disease" just sounds funny to me and to most people, including doctors, I don't know why.

There is Crohn's disease and it is also known as Crohn syndrome. But Crohn's is not as accepted as a slang. Also, last time I checked Dorland's, it said Alzheimer's disease so I don't know where you are getting Alzheimer disease. If you insist on using the slang, then I agree that you should not just type Crohn - that just looks like a mistake. For all you know, the doc said the S and it just makes it look like you did not hear it - to beat a technical dead horse - Why all the confusion?? If you type Crohn's then maybe you can get away with it but the issue is mute with Crohn's disease. :)
wow, you still don't get it, do you? - SM

I don't understand your sentences: "But Crohn's is not as accepted as a slang." and "If you insist on using the slang..." Also, what do you mean by the issue is "mute" with Crohn's disease?

I am not referring to Dorland's, I am referring to the BOS (the standard for most MTSOs). Under "eponyms - possessive form" it explains that the possessive form of eponyms should be dropped (e.g. Alzheimer disease, Hodgkin lymphoma, Crohn disease) unless the noun following the eponym is ommitted (e.g. Alzheimer's, Hodgkin's, Crohn's).

Is there any QA out there willing to weigh in on this?
I, too, would be interested in what a QA has to say. - NM

Always follow the BOS, which says either Crohn's or Crohn disease. You cannot trust the dictator to say the correct terminology. If he spelled it K-r-o-h-n would you type that. No. It is your job as MT or ME or MME to make corrections, including corrections in punctuation and grammar. If anyone in QA dings you for Crohn disease, you can point back to the BOS and get it reversed.

I'm puzzled why this was such a difficult question.
me too, but I gather that - sm

Someone on here said that "Crohn's" alone is slang and that you should add the word "disease", which is incorrect information.
