ETOH intoxication? - sw

Posted: Oct 27, 2011

My account is verbatim, except under any section dealing with diagnoses, in which case, the acronyms/abbreviations need to be expanded.  My question is, under discharge diagnoses, this dr. has dictated "ETOH intoxication."  Does this need to be expanded to exactly what "ETOH" means or is "alcohol intoxication" or even "ETOH intoxication" doable?

Thanks for your help!

can't be 100% sure, but - I use ethanol - sm

If you use the actual expansion of ETOH, most people that aren't professionals have no idea what that would mean. Alcohol is over-simplified, so I stick with ethanol, even though it's not a literal translation: You expand the abbreviation but don't use a combination of words that only docs and MTs would understand.

Either EtOH or ETOH is acceptable - sm

I have found the abbreviation either way.
