5 ml of saline were/was? - mtele

I know this seems so elementary but what is the correct verb for sentences that give the quantity of substances like saline, water, etc in ml? For example, is it 5 ml of saline was injected or 5 ml of saline were injected? Thanks!
was is correct as the word saline is singular - orthogirl

"were" is correct .. it refers to the mL, not the saline - and the mL is plural

It does not matter "what" it was 5 mL of.
The 2nd response is correct because (sm) - OTE
[ In Reply To ..]Subject verb agreement. "of saline" is a prepositional phrase and is additional information. If you take out the preposition, the sentence would read "5 mL were injected," which of course sounds better than "5 mL was injected." Make sense?

Forget what BOS says. This is basic grammar that is not changed by some book of made up rules.
