VR Blues - SadMT

Posted: Aug 23, 2010

Three weeks ago, my primary account switched to voice recognition without any forewarning.  My average line count used to be 2000 lines per day.  Since the switch to VR, it is now 1,000 to 1,400 lines.  Figure in the fact that I am making less $ per line now, plus my hundreds of normals are useless, plus the frustration knowing I used to type these reports myself in the same time it takes to correct all the VR mistakes - I am wits end.  On top of that, the line requirement to maintain full-time status is higher now, so I am afraid I will lose my insurance and other benefits.  (The work runs out more quickly with VR).  For the past couple weeks, I have applied for several different jobs with no luck. I have been doing this for 10+ years and now feel like I am on a sinking ship.  I've actually felt suicidal over the past couple weeks.   I hope something good happens soon.  Thanks for listening.

My sympathies to you - horrible situation - LK

Unfortunately, the only advice I can give is to get out of there as fast as you can. You will probably get responses from others telling you that this is the sad reality, you better get used to it, etc., but when this same situation happened to me I hit the road and found a great smaller company with no VR and no offshoring. They also don't overhire, so we almost always have work. I've had two very good years with them and hope for many more. Just keep applying, it's tough out there but with persistence you will find something. I would be clear with prospective employers that you want to do straight transcription only (you will have better luck with smaller companies). VR is a losing game for most MTs, although I understand there are some that feel they do well with it.

Its whats known as "Planned Obsolescence". - Voice-rec can go suck it! nm

Definitely know where you are coming from. Same with me. My line count is cut in half now and less work, therefore less paycheck!! Looking for another job in another field at this time.
