Breaking into VR - YesDear

Posted: Sep 01, 2010

Looking to break into VR Editing.  Can anybody give me any tips?  What companies hire for this.  I am a 52-yo medical transcriptionist with 20+ years experience and I am in the need of something different.  I am looking for a parttime position.  Two friends gave me two different leads, but I see one had massive lay-offs today and the other wants experienced VR Editors only.  Any tips will be greatly appreciated:)

YesDear, do you handle punctuation and grammar - Long-time Editor

on the fly as you transcribe, seldom needing to go back for adjustment? Was the last QAer bothering you about punctuation errors more because the QAer was a dingdong than your errors? Are you a fast reader when you get going, able to skim accurately? Do you, or could you answer the gram/punc questions that come up on these boards? Is your niche quick but punctilious, rather than quantity at any cost? If yes to all these, I'm guessing you'll do quite fine as an editor.

These days almost all companies are looking for editors, so with a pleasantly positive attitude to offer "breaking in" should be pretty easy. (As opposed to all those people still trying to avoid editing.) BTW, if you've ever been given messy reports to clean up after bad MTs had at them, you HAVE prior experience editing. That's the job, SR being the sloppy transcriptionist.

Regarding "massive layoffs," if you mean Webmedx, it's apparently only a relatively few people on a specific account. Mercifully.

What does it really matter if you are a speed reader? SM - anon

I read very fast with good comprehension, always have, but it doesn't help much when I still have to plod along with 100% text to audio listen. I can't increase speed too much as the sound distorts. I use M-Modal so probably 'nuff said. Not a great system.

I read/scan ahead of dictation looking for and correcting - Long-Time Editor

errors, while continuing to listen to the dictation for areas already scanned, ready to hop back if it varies from text. To do this well usually requires good familiarity with dictators, and I by choice only work on a few accounts. (There's still variety from dictators and specialties/report types that don't come by so often.)

I only stay with, or within a line of, a whole area of text that ISR's goofed up badly OR with dictators who are not familiar to me. Any plodding is as short as possible, then I'm cruising again until the next plod.

This requires ease of comprehension and speed but pays off nicely (as in $$). Dictation is sped up as often and as fast as I can handle--up up, down, down again, up up up, down, whatever, as the reports come through.

Oh, forgot to mention--I'm on M*Modal also and it's just fine at my company. And my QA scores are always high.

BTW, for anyone who works too many accounts to do this and isn't satisfied with earnings, I recommend dumping the extras. They're costing you big time, both this way and because you can't stuff your expander with the usual phrases of and corrections for the most frequent dictators. Dump the employer and find another if that's what it takes to get that speed up.

Happy Labor Day. :)
Hmm, I'm going to start with a better attitude tomorrow and implement those techniques. sm - anon

I have decent accounts other than one, but when that one sends work, I may as well hang it up for the day. It's very irritating though that the speech machine has not learned much of anything over the year it's been used. Still way too much correcting. But anyway, thanks for the reply, and I look forward to seeing what a new day brings.
Great, Anon! My sympathies for that one account. - Long-time Editor

My primary is a very standard regional medical center, but it replaced one that made me not want to sign on at all, so I do appreciate it. Anyway, I have almost everybody there nailed now, so it's a pretty good money machine.

Hope you find yourself a satisfying new groove, or set of grooves maybe, to cruise along in soon.

I went to work for Transcend having never done VR, but have been a very accurate MT for more than 20 years. Had no trouble adjusting to their VR platform and maintaining my usual line counts and accuracy. And I LOVE my team lead. I'm usually very dependable and available for emergencies/OT, and she frequently expresses her appreciation (unlike Breitner or MedQuist). This past month, I've had major computer problems and a move to a new home during which I broke my foot, and she still treats me like every time I show up on her screen is a delight.

I work at Transcend too and you must have the same TL - sm

Breaking In
Jul 30, 2010

Due to shrinking transcription work possibilities (that's an understatement), I was thinking of going back to school to become certified in some kind of hands-on patient care program-- ultrasound, LPN, RN, even CNA. I live in an area with a heavy concentration of medical facilities, and there is always a high demand for new hires. The problem is: The local community colleges cannot keep up with the demand for education. To get into ANY kind of patient care program, you have to already ...

Breaking Jobs
Dec 07, 2009

I always thought it was ok to break a job if I had to leave the computer due to some crisis at home.  If I'm working on a job and I've got to jump off the computer and don't know how long I'll be I break the job I'm working on, sign off, and when I sign back on it eventually does come back to me.  Is this wrong?  (Guess it is, from what I gather from comments on this board about cherry picking and being penalized for breaking jobs and what have you).  ...

Breaking Contract/suing
Apr 03, 2012

I'm working for a small company and upon initial hire, I signed a contract stating I need to give 14 days notice if I quit. Can they sue me for breaking the contract if I don't give notice? I've had something come up where I'm not able to work for them any longer and 14 days notice is just not feasible for me. ...

MTSOs: Breaking News!
Jun 25, 2013

It takes longer to edit a report than to transcribe it!  I have been keeping track of the time it takes using the process below. So, paying half the line count is just an excuse used. There is no truth to the statement that we can edit twice as fast, and your time clock production data shows this.  In the past two days I have doubled my production with straight transcription over editing.   EDITING PROCESS: Delete extraneous text that was not dictated. Correct font, point size ...
