I'm soon going to be working for a company who provides their computer and I also have my own desktop computer. Of course I want to be able to use my own computer and also have internet to the work computer. My question is, can I go ahead and purchase a router, install it on my own computer, and then when the work computer gets here just hook it up to that computer also? Do I need to have both computers here at the same time before I install the router on my own computer? Sorry... probably dumb question but I've never used a router before.

Not a dumb question at all. Yes, you can go ahead and install the router ahead of time. It's not a difficult process at all. If you purchase a Linksys, it comes with a CD and step-by-step directions.

A suggestion if you have cable internet - my experience

If you have cable and the computers are either in the same room or close by, you do not even need a router. I have both computers in the same room, and I just got a splitter for the cable coming into the room. Then I got 2 extra long cables - one to my personal computer and one to my work computer. The cable company will usually have those to give you for free.

There is something about routers that bugs some platforms. Whenever my internet goes out, the first thing my cable company asks is if I have a router. If you have cable, you might want to ask their Tech support what is best to use for your particular situation so you don't end up with a dropped signal or slow downloads.

The computers will be close to each other. I have one printer. I'm wondering what I will do when I want to print something from my work computer. the router does not connect the printer to both computers, correct? I know absolutely nothing about this tech stuff, as you can see. Would I download my printer software on the work computer also, and then switch the cord from one computer to the other when I need to print something?

I guess I'll just load the printer software on the work computer and switch cords from the back of the computer when I need to print from my own pc. (sorry I posted such a dumb question).

No question is dumb. I am not an expert by any means. I just learned as I went along trying to get myself set up. I had the same questions when I first had to deal with more than one computer. I actually have three - personal desktop, work, and personal laptop.

If your printer is newer and has a network "share" option, you can print from any computer without going through all the unplug here and plug in there. Once your router is set up on your main computer and your printer is attached to the same computer, you can just have the other computers as "shared" with the printer. The only thing you have to do is make sure the "main" computer and the printer are turned on before you send something to print.

If you search your particular printer or call tech support, they can probably walk you through exactly how to do that depending on your router, your printer, and your computer brands.

I transcribe for a large hospital from home through their VPN connection. I use a router at home, and keep getting disconnected from the VPN, am pretty sure it's the router. Anyone have any luck with a particular brand of router and VPN, I've heard Linkskys might be better?
