How do you dispose of your old desktop pc? - mtputer

I dont want to donate it, just dont feel comfortable doing that even though they say they wipe it clean. I thought I would follow a YouTube video to see how to remove the hard drive and then break up the rest. Is that silly?

I posted an ad on craigslist stating I had a free PC with the requirement that the taker remove and give me the hard drive before he/she could leave with the PC. I had an immediate response, several in fact.

I purchased the "Wipe Drive" program, and - MT Wordz - s/m

cleaned off the hard drive.

It was Christmastime, and since it was old, even though it ran perfectly, there was no point in trying to sell it, I offered it, as well as the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc., for free on Craigslist.

I ended up giving it to a low-income mom who had a 5-year-old son that she wanted a computer for. (She knew that any kid without access to a PC nowadays is pretty much doomed..) So the PC went to a good home, and a very deserving (and I'm sure excited!) little boy.

You can clean the hard drive yourself. Our city also - sm

buried on our property. LOL. We live in the boonies. Then put the rest of the PC in the dumpster.

...took out the hard drive and then smashed it with a sledgehammer. He was told it was the most absolute secure way to dispose of it. He's a little paranoid about his privacy.

Have any of you had this problem? (1) Most days, when I first start my PC, the desktop icons won't appear. I'll get the background screensaver picture, but nothing to click on. Is there a certain combination of keys you can hit to make the icons appear? Or to open Explorer? Currently the only way I can deal with this is to shut down the PC and then restart it.
