A question about using a router... - computerdummy

Posted: Oct 22, 2009

I am NO computer geek by any stretch of the imagination.  I have 2 computers but use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse.  To switch from one to the other, I would need a router, correct?  A friend suggested a Linksys router.  Is installing a router relatively easy to do?  Sorry, this is probably a "dumb" question especially to all you computer wizards, but I've never used more than 1 computer before.

Using a router - KYMT

It is not difficult at all. I use a Linksys router, and it comes with an instruction CD that tells you step-by-step exactly how to set it up. It's not a dumb question at all.

Thank you so much! (n/m) - computerdummy

My DSL modem is a router as well as a modem. sm - MT and worn out

My DSL modem works as a router. It has 4 ethernet ports in the back. I went to Radio Shack, told them what I needed, and came home with a 25 foot ethernet cord. I simply plugged one end of the ethernet cord into my modem and the other end into my work computer. Presto chango....2 working computers sharing the same Internet connection. I didn't need any software as the modem/router was already in use on my home computer. The only disadvantage to sharing the Internet is if you lose your Internet connection, your work computer goes down along with your home computer.

When you look at a router before you buy it, check out the letters on them. The letters mean something. A "G" is not as good as the "N" or vice versa. The guys at Best Buy explained all that to me. And from what I gather, the letters mean basically the same thing no matter what brand router.

It seems I've isolated my problem with losing connection to I/N to my router. I currently have a D-link.  If I am to replace this, is there a better one to get, or certain features to look for?  thanks. ...

Belkin Router/VPN Dropping Connect Help
Sep 17, 2011

I transcribe for a large hospital from home through their VPN connection.  I use a router at home, and keep getting disconnected from the VPN, am pretty sure it's the router.  Anyone have any luck with a particular brand of router and VPN, I've heard Linkskys might be better?  My broad band company nor my tech support at work "do not support routers" so if I want to use one, I'm on my own.  Have called Belkin, will call again, but just thought I'd ask on t ...
