How low have we fallen? - xyz

Posted: May 22, 2014

This comment, inside a thread below, really hit me.  I always suspect that comments like these are posted by either HR or social media dept inside Nuance.  Of course, that is really unknowable.  But just for the sake of discussion, let's assume that this actually is the sentiment of a real, flesh and blood Nuance transcriptionist.  Is this the "new normal" for an MT ... to have an employer meets payroll !#:??#! Yikes.

"I work for Nuance too, and I have, to date, had only good experience ... but for now, let's just enjoy the fact that we have a job and are paid on time"

I quit Nuance a couple months ago and finally - stopped taking klonopin.

There's an anecdote for ya!

A timely check doesn't make up for the fact that it doesn't cover groceries, let alone rent.

On antidepressant first time in 18 years - xyz

My new job @ Nuance has cost me a 50%+ pay cut, depressive symptoms, and a trip to the doctor (more than 95% out of pocket expense) to get a prescription for the antidepressant. Thank heaven for generic rx, or I would really be up the creek!
I have an interview next week, and I'm very encouraged about it. As I calculate the difference in compensation with Nuance, I will factor in these unexpected expenses as well.

The best of luck with your interview. I hope you - get the job! :)

I had to go to the doctor to get on meds too, meds which I hadn't taken for 5 years. They even did a bunch of lab work to make sure there wasn't a physical reason for my panic attacks. After I quit, the meds stayed in their cabinet until I thew them away eventually.
Thanks :-) - xzy

I have many people praying for me, and including St. Jude Novena (and I've not even Catholic). St. Jude (Desperate situations and hopeless cases) certainly covers Nuance workers.

the only way I can work for Nuance is - on Klonopin, generic that is

Needed medication - Pollyanna

I'm surprised you can afford to see a doctor with this health care insurance. I wanted to see a psychologist and was told I need to pay $200 in cash for the first visit. Needless to say I go without treatment here or with any other doctor for that matter!
can't afford to see a doc, don't have insurance - but must be on drugs to still be in MT
[ In Reply To ..]
When my skills got sold to N with no recourse, I couldn't afford ANYTHING anymore but I have an excellent, understanding doctor who made me a cash deal and gives me a discount ($54 paid day of service, and RX is only $15/60 days at Walmart). Dr. knew me from my employment at the hospital and truly feels bad what happened to the MT profession, alas, is enslaved by Managed Care and has no control over the people who use insurance. I do not have N's insurance and find it quite beneficial sometimes to "not have ins" at all, what's the point with a $2500 deductible??

Time for some more medication....

I'm pretty close to that point myself, with their - constant emails and other crap. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
First and primary reason: These stupid constant cheerleading emails about MT Week when the MTs are obviously NOT valued at all - during MT week or any other time.

The constant emails on account spec changes, not to mention the constant changes themselves.

The managers not available when needed for questions or problems, no idea when they are available or their schedules.

The platform of Emdat is a pain. It's not as wonderful as it's bragged up to be.

No consistency in anything... I've heard all the horror stories, went into this job with Nuisance well aware, but you can only find out the extent of the problems by working here.

That was a comment I posted, and I assure you - I am a living, breathing MT

I am a "new hire" who came in with a buyout. I'm on the "ambulatory side," and so far I still have my same accounts, I still have my same exclusives, my rate of pay is still the same as it was before I became a Nuance employee, and I still do get paid on time. All of those things are good things. At least that's the way I see it right now, especially with so many MTs who don't have steady work, who don't have on-time pay, and who don't have exclusives and struggle every day to make a living wage.

The only thing on a daily basis that is a change for me is clocking in and out using WebClock.

I did acknowledge in that post that I'm aware that things might change when I stated "Sure, my time may come..." which was part of my comment that you left out.

There are Nuance employees who are not MLSs who have posted here and do not identify themselves as such. So I am in the habit of reading Nuance positives as "possibly" coming from them. There are limitations to boards like this, who, what, where someone is may or may not be what they say. While I did not include "sure, my time may come" in the text, I did link your entire comment for it to stand on its own.
Bottom line, I came here via hospital outsource, and it has been a very, very bad work experience for me. We were also started at our old salaries. My biggest regret is that I did not take seriously the scathing remarks made about Nuance. I would have been hitting the pavement morning, noon, and night, to find something else, much sooner than I did.
Honestly, my reason for posting negatively here is my genuine desire to have others avoid a serious mistake that I made, signing on with Nuance. That may or may not end up being your experience, but it is still unknown, so having yourself be prepared for what may lie ahead only makes sense IMO.

Thinking of making a move to Nuance - Mae

Hello, I am thinking of moving to Nuance. I am right now employed by MModal. From what I'm reading, it sounds like Nuance is just like MModal. If there is any positives at all, please let me know. I appreciate the honest negative comments about the company. Have an interview with Nuance. Anxious to see what they offer me.

How low have we fallen - unfortunately

[ In Reply To ..]
these statements are how a lot of the companies make the workers feel. I have been told that I should be glad I am still working with the way transcription is going. Now that the holiday is coming and they are behind (I am IC not employee) they are begging every which way for extra lines and I am holding strong to my contract unless they want to pay extra. Guess if they want work done, they will have to pay.

I'm NOT working because of how MT has been - going, and I prefer being unemployed!

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm actually getting more on UI than I did working for my former MTSO, because now I have all day to devote to my cash job, not just an hour or two here and there.

One of the biggest reliefs in finally being laid off was being able to ERASE all that company crapware from my computer. Now it runs like it's brand-new. It's also nice to be able to get up to use the restroom without being timed.

How MT has been going - Fatigued Fingers

As soon as I figured out that I could make more money by taking an early retirement I decided to do just that. My first check comes next month.
Retirement - gimme a break - Pollyanna
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't even need to ask if you're single or married. If you're single you WON'T be retiring! This industry has raped me of being able to financially provide for myself. I have no one to pay the bills but me. I've given up everything there is to give up including my home, my hobbies and anything that isn't nailed down!
Pollyanna - it is possible for those who have been MTs - Simple Living and a good paying job
[ In Reply To ..]
for many years. Yes, this is a horrible industry but it wasn't always. I too am taking an early retirement next month at age 60. I have IRAs which I had been able to get when MT was a good paying field. (They are now paying 0.2% interest so there is no incentive to not use them.) And I am single. Always have been. I have paid for my house, my vehicles and have money saved. I am working at Nuance because they bought out Probity and will stay just until the subsidy they are giving runs out. Otherwise I would have retired at age 59 1/2 when I was able to take out my IRA without penalty. While I understand why you hate Nuance, I am glad I got in when I was young and the money was good. If it had not been good at the beginning, I would have found something else because there is no way I would start out with an occupation that is now not an occupation but a low paying job that you have to go to school for. If you are young, get out. I tried finding a job in another field in my 50s and no one would even interview me. So that is why I stayed and am counting down the days until I can retire early and live off my savings. Because of how MT was for 25 years for me, I am, as a single person, debt-free, able to retire early and have a decent future (I hope). But don't be so critical of those who are able. We really did have the opportunity. As far as those who stay in and complain (I really do have nothing good to say about MT either), do you really want to be complaining for X number of years and be no better off?

Pollyanna, that was a rather a snarky comment, but I'll tell you that I live with my boyfriend and he has an income and that, my dear, is how I can afford retirement.
Single and retiring - BTDT
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm single and also plan to retire early (62 or when my job ends, whichever comes first). I maxed out my 401K when times were good and managed to save quite a bit. I also have no credit card debt and plan to be totally debt-free when I retire. I can live on what I will make on Social Security if I'm not extravagant. Single people can do it too.
If people were truly making $20 to $30 an hr - 5-10 yrs ago...sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Then they should be able to take an eary retirement. And with the way MT wages are now, I would say even those who made &14 to $20 can take an early retirement and have more coming in than what they make at.MT and do just fine, single or not.

Re-employment compensation - Millie

[ In Reply To ..]
Here is a bit of good news. IF YOU DO NOT QUIT AND JUST GO AWAY, and you provide a GOOD REASON WHY YOU WENT AWAY FROM THE JOB, you CAN get unemployment compensation. They now call it re-employment compensation! Depending on the population of your county, you will have to apply for 3 - 5 jobs a week and you do have to take a skills test (basic math and reasoning skills with graphs to interpret). Pretty simple. JUST DO NOT QUIT as they have to fire you if you don't show up.
re-employment compensation - sunmoon57
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, don't quit. At least let them pay you unemployment benefits. The rest was great for me and got paid too!! I started 8 years ago with MDI to Transcend, and then Nuance transition for 11 months. Two of my friends quit within the first 2-3 months of the buyout with Nuance because they were not happy with Nuance as well. Went back for coding and billing (best thing I could have done). Transcription jobs in America are looking more or less like minimum wage jobs these days, unless you just like working long hours for less pay.

How Many Times Have You Fallen Below
