Medical miracle - "He had a hysterectomy . . . " - mkj

Posted: Oct 23, 2009

So, I graduated an AHDI-approved course, only to run into "No newbies!" and "2+ years experience required." I am currently working a clerical position for an insurance company. I receive the claims when they come in, and see heinous MT errors all the time. It seems that 2, 5, 8, 10+ years of experience makes NO DIFFERENCE because the MTs these companies employ are either:

A. Overconfident in their job security

B. Getting lazy in their old age

C. Relying too much on voice recognition

D. Keeping one ear on the TV soaps

D. Work for 3 cents a line in the 3rd world, and the company doesn't care how bad they are, they're cheap and they don't have to pay their healthcare, because their country does (like any CIVILIZED country).

The one that made me laugh the most recently was reading "He had a hysterectomy . . . "

Now, that is HYST-erical!!

Until next time, posting to you from the soon-to-be obsolete clerical world . . .

so, what are you saying .... - n/m

I hate to say this, but with your attitude, you may have a hard time in this field. I have been an MT for over 30 years, and while yes, I have the television on while I work, I have it on more for the background noise factor. It is no different than working in an office where you have the constant distraction of phones ringing and co-workers chatting, et cetera. I take extreme pride in my work, because ultimately, it is the PATIENT that we are responsible to.

I believe that some of the remarks that you made regarding "older MTs" were TOTALLY uncalled for. I had a personal experience when my husband died where on his death certificate they had typed the cause of death being "CA of the hypop harnynx." I called the coroner's office and the gal said that she would just white it out and correct it -- my response to that was go ahead and you will have an extremely large lawsuit on your hands.

When I learned MT, I learned it in a hospital, double spacing my reports, and having my supervisor going over those reports before they could be typed in final format. Too MANY people nowadays are getting into this profession with the thought of A) Either big bucks or B) The fact that they can stay at home and work around a schedule suitable for their children and unfortunately, this is not the case. I make excellent money; however, I work hard and the facility and doctors whom I transcribe for are extremely happy with my work.

As long as your quality doesn't suffer, more power to you if you need the white noise (some people do). But I am telling you, the errors I see on these reports that are coming in are really atrocious. I am guessing the QA for the particular companies and facilities we are getting reports from is really lax. There have been other doozies I have seen, I really am going to start keeping a list and post them to the Humor section.

They are largely Life claims I am seeing. Yes, it is very wrong to put, on permanent record, errors in regards to someone's death. It is a legal record and may need to be referred to (especially for family health history later, or for legal purposes).

I don't expect big bucks, and I don't have any children.

I just received the highest score on verbal ability the test administrator had ever seen. I've done college work in the Social and Life sciences. I started college at 16.

I got ill with MS and need a job where I can work from home. It's frustrating to be on my feet all day in the kind of distracting office environment you describe. I feel I could be doing more with my time, skills, or what remaining talents I have left (MS robs you of a lot of your multitasking abilities).

My only other question is, who do you work for and how quick can I get there? LOL ; ) Of course that secret may be kept as close as the location of a great fishing hole.

I forgot to put a password on the last post, now I can't go back and edit for content and errors.
@$%#%$# oh well.

A major part of why I have not yet worked in this field is the lack of benefits for MTs such as Health and STD/LTD.

Like I said, permanent newbie. I don't know why I even bother.

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...
