has issues right now...nurses and others being called off due to low census at the hospital, cuts in retirement, etc. It's not all roses anywhere in healthcare right now.
Didn't they put through an emergency visa program to allow - 70,000 immigrant nursing visas?

I know they were going to do it, but without Lou Dobbs around to keep me posted, I lost track of it. Apparently O, for all he is despised by many, was against it, saying money would be better spent education our own nurses rather than importing them. Not sure whether he got his way on that or not, but with US nurses being laid off and new grads unable to find jobs, it would be pretty darn stupid to be bringing in 70,000.

It would depend on your age, how many more years you plan to work, how much time you are willing to spend in school and how much money you have to spend on your education.
People are pouring out of nursing because of many problems - But it is an option

There are many ESL nurses these days to fill the slots left by others. Nurses I know are getting out. Long, hard schedules, split shifts, heavy manual labor, back-breaking work, frequent injuries, increasing lack of respect from doctors and patients, and lack of time to do patient care because of all of the reports required. However, it's a job. Work is work.

Well, I'm 44, so I don't think so. I wish I had gone into some aspect of this field years ago.

Jobs come with advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of being a nurse: You get to wear a uniform. You get to tell people what to do.
Disadvantages: You have to wear a uniform. People tell you what to do.

The Job I Want - My Ideal Work Situation - Work may not be the correct term for it

Okay, here's my ideal work (loosely phrased) situation.
Flexible hours.
Short hours.
I am my own boss.
There are no deadlines.
I reject anything I don't want to do.
I only deal with pleasant people.
I make lots of money.

Google captionist, dubbing, and subtitling. I think this might be a real good transition for medical transcriptionists. Captionists do the close captioned broadcasts for TV news and most programs and they actually are well paid. Requires some software training along with that steno machine court reporters use, but hey, why sit around and wait for India to have ALL our jobs...IMH, they can have it at 4cpl. Since the American Disabilities act, this field is wide open. Check it out! This can also be done remotely. Ask you local TV station who does their captioning.
If it can be done remotely, it will be. Would end up - kissing that one goodbye too. nm

I'm checking into a B.S. in Health Informatics. Combination RHIA and IT Department certifications. Looking on-line at WGU - I'm in Indiana and our Gov. is supporting this. Never thought I'd have time to go back but tuition seems competitive, accreditation is legit, and studying on line looks promising. I'm good with the Med Rec part, it's the IT part that will be a challenge. MT has been very good to me. I make decent money, but feel this may be useful when looking toward the future.

I'm thinking that general transcription would be better for many of us.
What do you folks think of court reporting as yet another option?
The trouble with court reporting is - a long list
[ In Reply To ..]
The world of court reporting is changing, but some things remain the same. You pay a huge amount of money to go to school. You are allowed to go as long as you want, paying a huge amount every year until you meet the minimum requirements, which are extremely hard to reach. That's just to get through school. It's an option, but you have to remember that it's work, just like MT. Work is hard. The pay is never good enough and jobs are always hard to come by.

I walked into my community college and asked an advisor to give me a list of choices of careers I could study locally that would be quick. My sole purpose is to re-enter the working world as fast as possible. Medical Billing / Coding was one of the options.
A friend reffered this site to me in response to an MT oportunity and, as if my prayers were answered, I noticed the Coding / Billing forum which has answered many questions. However, I have more, I always do.

So, being a PT'er, I have to stick around the whole shift waiting for jobs? There is no option for PT'ers as we do not accumulate paid time off. This is pretty crummy and really unfair. If I am expected to sit here for 8 hours doing nothing, I should get paid something for my time. ...
Within the next couple weeks, MModel will be upgrading DQS in my region, so I finally was able to buy a brand new computer with Win7, rather than refurbs with Win XP. Until they "flip the switch," I'm still using my old computer, but did get a new laptop and have been exploring Win7.
I've discovered that Outlook Express is now defunct! What email programs is everyone using. I'm not crazy about Gmail or Yahoo.

I started with a new company and I did not have spellcheck, so I ordered it and it was quite expensive for the 2010 one. Now I found out that when I am in their program they are using their own. This has really ticked me off because I was TOLD that I needed to download a spellchecker and now I cannot send it back because I have downloaded it. Is there anyway that I can use this spellchecker instead of theirs?
Any feedback will be appreciated. ;) ...
To those of you who desperately need insurance now, here is a great place to look for temporary insurance. If you eventually find out that COBRA is not going to happen or LM jerks you around so long you miss the deadline, you can still qualify for Uninsurable Risk insurance depending on the State you live in. Some of these plans may even be cheaper than COBRA, which is something you might want to look into.

Is it just me, or does it seem like every time I have audio highlighted and the one below it checked under Tools/Options, that I have to go back in and uncheck them because some dictator is putting things out of order. I give up! I guess I'll just have to leave them unchecked. Anyone come up with an easier solution? I can't think of any.

I have been an MT for 12 years. When I first entered it was GREAT!!! My pay has decreased so much during the years and it seems like the work is less and less. I am a hard worker and I am tired of fighting to survive.
I am thinking about different career options and would like to go back to school. My top two picks are physical therapy assistant or radiology technologist. Both are a 2-year degree. However, they are hard to get into, long waiting lists, ...
Was snooping through the options. Under the 2nd options on the drop-down list, the "reply option" default is "reply all." I changed mine to no, just to be on the safe side. Under "layout" is where you can set up your signature block. ...
My headset is worn out has wires showing (again). I have taped it numerous times, but this last time the sound quality is not good. I have been trying unsuccessfully to replace because I have really tiny ears and the ones advertised as "designed to fit all ears" usually end up falling out anyway and back they go for a refund. I would just replace the cord if it didn't cost as much as a whole new set. Tried the ones for children, but the sound quality is not good eno ...
Hi. I am very interested in attending Andrews school for coding. The only problem is I may not be able to pay in full at the time of enrollment. Has anyone done the payment option and if so how did it work for you? Thanks. ...
Good morning or afternoon everyone
As I have run through a list of companies that hire medical transcriptionists I found on the website Rat Race Rebellion (a work at home website) I was directed to this forum and I must say it is a wealth of information so I am glad I have found it !
I am in Kentucky and graduated with an Associates degree last year in medical billing and coding hoping that would give me a leg up on my resume aside from my experience just in healthcare insurance ...
I am only able to find a privately owned local phone company in this small town to offer Internet, through the phone, requires a landline (which I really did not need). Pricing: $100. For 750 min long distance, call waiting, caller ID, DSL - 3MB. VERY expensive just for internet and phone line!Insane...ALL calls ANYWHERE except within just two small communities within 5 miles of our new house are long distance! So, we will be using our cell phones for all calls. There are no ot ...
Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day. I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December. The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding. So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? I live in a rural area and there are advertisements for registered/accredited coders at medical facilities, but I'm afraid of spending all that time and money on schooling only to not be able to find a job. I am thinking about changing from MT to coding. Are there many opportunities to work from home with coding? What would be a good school to attend?
Thank you for the help. ...
My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test. This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course. I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...
I've been an MT for going on 8 years now, and I've been throwing around the idea of taking a coding class. I would really like to have something else to fall back on, as it seems that MT'ing is going more and more to VR. There's a local coding class that begins in January for $1700, but I wanted to get some feedback of current coders before signing up. Is the demand for coders still fairly high? Is it hard to find a job as a newbie, even with already having experience in the ...
I have almost 12 years experience as an MT (turn 30 in a month ACK!) My mom has been telling me for a couple years now (since it started going downhill) that I should maybe think about coding as a career. I guess she thinks I'd be good at it, but I have no idea. I have just started my research but I thought I would kind of get some pros and cons about it see if anyone had advice or thoughts on anyone thinking about it. I always feel like I'm too old to start som ...
What was the best thing about the coding course you took? Did it prepare you for the CCS and CPC exams or maybe just the CCA? Did you take any of those exams and did you pass or fail them? What course did you take? Did you think it was hard or easy?
You don't need to answer all of the questions, but maybe a couple of them. Thanks. ...
there's just ONE little thing that keeps me doubting the possibility of it being a long-term career:
I keep seeing more and more ads every week for "at home coders". Does this make you at least a little nervous? It makes me a LOT nervous. We all know that once MTs started working from home, the MT field went into a tailspin, pay-wise, because "work-at-home" seems to translate into "work-in-India", instead.
Also I see some ads for MTSOs that also offer coding. ...
I am generally pretty good at making my own decisions; however, I need advice on what to do in this situation. I am currently an MT making $55,000-$60,000 year. The last few years MT work slowed down due to VR/EMR and it was harder and harder to replace lost accounts.
While I was looking for another client/MTSO to fill the gap last year, I took a college course for coding and passed the CPC thinking I would have a back-up plan if needed; however, I found more MT work shortly after passing the C ...
I passed the CCS and CPC exam 8 months ago but have yet to find a job :(. I busted my bu** to become a certified coder, and now that I am one, no one will hire me without experience. I live in a small town. We have one hospital. I applied and was flat out told they cannot hire coders without minimum 2 years experience. I asked if I could volunteer or job shadow and they said no. No jobs there in HIM at all. Our local medical clinic has a coding company t ...
