Funding - Yooper Typer

Posted: Jul 25, 2011

Has anybody ever received any funding from their state through the unemployment office to pay for the medical transcription class?  I live in Michigan and will find out more on Wednesday but I'm so anxious to find out. The person at the desk says they usually only pay for an online medical billing/coding class through a local college. I was just wondering if anybody had succeeded in this & wondering what to say to convince them to go with the online school instead of the community college.  I will let you know as soon as I hear of anything!

Depends on which state you live in - See message

The person at the desk has already let you know that it's probably not going to happen in Michigan. Each state gets to decide how they want to do that. Some have really close ties to a community college and nobody goes anywhere but there. That's just the way it is.

You can try sticking to your guns and saying, 'I have done my research. I have talked to School X and that's where I want to go. I have met their enrollment requirements and they have accepted me as a student if I can get funding. The reason I want to go to School X is, the quality of their program, the fact that their graduates get jobs, etc.' You may or may not convince them, but it won't hurt to try. Just let them know that you know what you want, you have done your homework. You take this seriously. You intend to succeed, and no, even though you know they mean well, you aren't going to a school that has no track record of success in this field.

No worker left behind - hope this helps

I'm also from the U.P! Last January (2011) I also checked into the state funding through the "No Worker Left Behind" program/Obama dollars. What I found out is that they no longer fund Medical Transcription. However, I looked online to see what school they were recommending for this program and it was Western Michigan University. Although I have had to pay for it on my own, I have been really happy with the course work. It is thorough, demanding, and exciting. Good luck to you!

I've been an MT for 26 years and want to take the Andrews coding course, but I literally have no money. Last year my roof caved in and I found out my cat had mouth cancer on the same day my roof caved in (he died 2 months after diagnosis). So I have a lot of debt paying off the roof and vet bills. I'm on food stamps. I know if I complete the course I'll be making more money and relieve my financial burden, but how do I pay for it when I have nothing? Does anybody have any suggesti ...

WIA/Workforce Funding?

seems like almost the entire focus anymore is how to get out of MT! Well I was looking at an online class and it said it qualifies for WIA/Workforce funding, and I have never heard of that! Has anyone? I looked on the US Labor website but of course it was not helpful.  This class isn't cheap and funding would sure help.  ...
