I've been an MT for 26 years and want to take the Andrews coding course, but I literally have no money. Last year my roof caved in and I found out my cat had mouth cancer on the same day my roof caved in (he died 2 months after diagnosis). So I have a lot of debt paying off the roof and vet bills. I'm on food stamps. I know if I complete the course I'll be making more money and relieve my financial burden, but how do I pay for it when I have nothing? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Tough one. Have you researched education assistance programs in the state in which you live? Also state financial assistance programs and aid ...

Many of their students raise money with yard sales. You don't need three-fourths of what is in your house. Sell it.

Some also raise money by putting aside what they would have spent on coffee, candy, soft drinks, bottled waters, prepared foods, eating out, cigarettes, clothes, and entertainment. They find it builds up fast. They estimate how much they spend on that every week and put that amount aside.

Others clean homes or condos of friends and ask for referrals. They wash and detail cars, mow lawns, wash windows, shovel snow, do shopping for hire.

Many find that cooking pays off. They cook for working relatives and friends on weekends and special occasions. They cook favorite casseroles or other dishes that can be frozen. They fix a week's worth of lunches for work and school.

A lot of them find that people donate when they find out what you want to do, IF you have a sensible plan.

There are websites where you can ask for people to help with a project or need. Write a professional, mature business proposal for what you want to do. The fact that your job is being outsourced is a good reason, unavoidable home repairs such as storm damage are a good reason, but don't get political about offshoring or maudlin about dead pets.

You could get a second job waiting tables or fast food and save every penny from it. Don't say you have no time, because if you do, you have no time for school, either.

You can also get started with the free resources on the CMS website, where they have training for doctors and office staff. You can get used books on Amazon and start with that.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

I totally agree with these suggestions - please sm

The first thing I did was have a yard sale. Then, I gave up my daily coffee (around $3+ a day) and made my own. I even saved what was left from the morning and used it for iced coffee in the afternoon. I bought those fat free, low calorie, flavored creams at the grocery store on sale. Although it wasn't quite the same, it was "doable." It's funny - even now when I buy a coffee, I feel just a little bit guilty, even though I can now afford it.

My husband and I gave up going out to dinner and cooked at home, although we did try to go out once every month or two, just scaled back on what we spent. He was so supportive of my decision to go back to school - this definitely kept me going through all those hours of studying and lack of sleep associated with it.

I also colored my hair instead of going to the salon for almost two years - this was one of my least favorite sacrifices, but I can't believe how much I saved! Now that I graduated and I am working as a coder, going to the salon makes me smile EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Sorry this got a little long but my motto is where there's a will, there is most definitely a way. Good luck!

I am in a similar position, in that I do not have extra money to save toward the downpayment for my coding course. So, I have started selling things on craigstlist. I have 3 kids and a lot of stuff they don't use anymore (old toys, furniture, books, clothes). Everything I sell something, it goes in the "School Fund" jar. I still have a long way to go, but it's something!

thanks for your kind wishes. Losing anyone who has been in your life for 18+ years is devastating, especially losing them to cancer. I miss him every day still.

should qualify for a grant, and if not, you can always qualify for a student loan that you don't have to repay until you start working. It would be well worth it. The school will help walk you through it if you need them to.

do you have experience with them or - anon

are you just referring to schools in general? I tried to get an education loan from a bank and sallie mae, but they require a school code, Andrews doesn't have one, so can't get a loan that way. I'll probably just go to my local college cause they have a school code and that seems to be my only option at the moment.

Funding

Has anybody ever received any funding from their state through the unemployment office to pay for the medical transcription class?  I live in Michigan and will find out more on Wednesday but I'm so anxious to find out. The person at the desk says they usually only pay for an online medical billing/coding class through a local college. I was just wondering if anybody had succeeded in this & wondering what to say to convince them to go with the online school instead of the communit ...

WIA/Workforce Funding?
Mar 08, 2013

seems like almost the entire focus anymore is how to get out of MT! Well I was looking at an online class and it said it qualifies for WIA/Workforce funding, and I have never heard of that! Has anyone? I looked on the US Labor website but of course it was not helpful.  This class isn't cheap and funding would sure help.  ...
