Exams - LadyMT

Posted: Sep 18, 2010

I have a question that I hope is being posted to the correct forum.  This question is  for anyone who has taken a final  transcription exam to complete your course with the online school you attended.  Were you allowed to see your transcription exam after it had been graded, whether it was a pass or fail?  If you failed, were you allowed to have the transcription portion of the exam back so that you could review your errors?  Does anyone know if it's standard practice for online MT schools not to return exams?

At Andrews the exams come back with very detailed feedback - on any problem areas

The feedback is detailed where you need it and you can ask questions if you don't understand the explanations or grading.

I assume it's like that in most MT schools.

Please don't assume - anon

that all exams come back graded. They do not. Some schools do not even have instructors. These kinds of schools cannot provide the kind of education you need--you really need instructors and feedback, not just grade yourself "answer keys." You cannot know what you do not know.....Instructors are necessary.

That is true. Instructors and detailed feedback are necessary - as you said

That's true. Not every school does, and, in my opinion, the instructors and detailed feedback are critical.

final exams - yes

I failed the 1st trial and was told I could repeat it any time I wanted to.
I did not get back my transcription exam with the corrections, I was only told to study a bit more.

I passed the 2nd trial and got my exam back with the corrections, only 2 this time, the exam was 70 psges long, the certificate and a very nice and encouraging cover letter.

final exams - yes

I want to add that I asked for a copy of my failed transcription test, and they told me that this will not help me much, since they stop correcting as soon as the accuracy percentage falls below 98%. This was the policy at my MT school.

That's a shame. Sorry that happened to you. It doesn't help you learn much, does it? - nm

The real problem is that many times the "grader" isn't an MT - Been There

I've seen classes where the people responsible for doing the grading weren't MTs and couldn't have told you why something was right or wrong, they are just marking it off a template.

Then I remember back to when I was in a class where we actually traded tests with another student and graded each other's work. I understand that some MT schools do that too, because they can't afford real teachers. In my opinion, the teacher is the course. If you don't have a good one, you are toast.

My favorite method for exams is that they be educational - Love To Learn

If your goal is to teach students, make the final exam part of the education and teach. If the goal is to just get it done as fast as possible, you get the kind of exam that just has things marked right or wrong, with no explanation or help to keep you from doing it in the future. That's just one difference in schools, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

What school did you attend? I just completed an MT course at Penn Foster and they sent back my final transcription reports with handwritten notes and I was able to see my mistakes.

Wow...we did our finals, as well as all of our other work through our software, and had a real MT as an instructor. We were able to view all of our work completed with detailed feedback on everything we did.

I transcribing a dictation where "physical examination" was already dictated after the history of present illness and before the past medical history.  Now she's dictated it again after the review of systems.  Is it possible that the first one should have gone under the history of present illness heading?  Also, in her review of systems, she numbers each heading...should I transcribe it as such or leave the numbers out? ...

Certification Exams
Mar 08, 2012

I'm seriously considering going to school for coding and have started to make plans accordingly.  This isn't a big question, but one my husband brought up:  Do you take the certification exams online or do you have to travel to a facility to take them?  Do you take the exams through your school or through the agency doing the certification?  Thanks in advance. ...

CMT & CHDS Exams--They Don't Help U Get A Job
Mar 08, 2014

I don't think I am surprising anyone with the observation that CHDS or CMT credentials don't help you get a job. I have applied at several companies and I don't even get a courtesy of a response--even from companies that say they "care if you are certified." The bottom line for the companies is to pay the lowest you can and quality doesn't matter. No surprise here. ...
