Dictators who love to talk - Thornbush

Posted: Apr 07, 2013

Some dictators really like talking into that dictaphone and telling stories (literally novels) about their patients... but , the more these guys talk (blab, rather) - the more money I get! So, it's a doube-edged sword in this regard. The downside is that it's sooooooooo irritating and frustrating to keep typing as they go on and on and on and on and on and on until the cows come home! You wonder when the dictation will end!

What do you guys think? Does anyone else get "story telling" dictators?

I sure have - Oldie But Goodie

I've been doing mostly hospital dictations for my 15 years in the biz. The H&Ps are the longest. I kind of like it---or did until they went to ASR, then it was just boring editing them.

Back in the day of straight typing, I didn't mind the novels. It flowed nicely and I could get a lot of lines in with just one report.

I never thought it my place to pass judgment on what my clients dictated about or how long they took. I am not a "guy," and yes, I had many, many "story telling" dictators. That was just their style, and it did not bother me. In fact, I rather like the fact that they were adding to my bank account by adding so many more lines. :)

Like I said, - Thornbush

[ In Reply To ..]
The more they talk, the more lines I type, the more money I earn. I was merely observing.

BTW, "guys" is a slang term for "all of you", whether male or female, so there was no need to get offended.

Thornbush - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
No, "guys" is not a gender-neutral word. No, it is not okay to mangle the English language. Of all people, someone who works with words for a living should know that.
"Guys" and "Dudes" is indeed now gender neutral. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
at least for the younger generations. It is a living language.
Not, it is not gender neutral - Old Pro
[ In Reply To ..]
Some people still treat the English language with respect. I know people in the younger generation who speak English perfectly. I know some oldsters who mangle the language. I guess it's all in what you value.
Problem is........ - xx
[ In Reply To ..]
The younger folks do not know proper grammar (or in many cases, manners). I am in a hiring position and if anyone referred to me as a "guy," I would throw their resume in the wastebasket.
I do the same for "gals" - NotACowgirl
[ In Reply To ..]
Although it isn't gender-inappropriate, "gals" rubs a lot of people the wrong way with its hoedown/foot-stompin'/cowgirl effect.

I agree with you. It is a matter of good manners. I often wonder, whatever happened to manner in the business world. If anyone came to an interview with me and said, "Well, dude, let me tell you....." I would say "This interview is over." I would not hire anyone who referred to me as a "gal," even though I am a woman. The closest I come to roping is chasing my rottie down the street.
I give up... - Thornbush

FIRST OF ALL:

I humbly ask forgiveness from anyone I have offended in any way, for whatever it is that I have said and done. God is my witness.

I think this all comes down to the fact that I used the word "guys" when I asked what you all think of my post. All of the ad hominum attacks I have received up until now have nothing to do with what I actually said in my post, but rather a simple WORD that offended the lot of you.

Alternatively, if I were to ask, "What do you ALL think?", or "What do you PEOPLE think?", it would have been more favorable to all of you because I would not be pushing anyone's sensitive buttons, albeit unintentionally.

Clearly, what has been said in the replies I have received in regard to my post about my observing dictators' speech patterns, do NOT concern my observation, but rather only concern a certain WORD I used.

Because this is an INFORMAL forum, I (by mistake) used a (supposed) gender-neutral word in my post and addressed all of you by it. In no way did I expect that I would open a Pandora's box of insults, offenses, hurt feelings, and especially immaturity.

It's a shame that one can't even communicate with people over the internet on a forum such as this, because of the many immature posters who get offended if God forbid someone does not express things the way they expect. Rather, they choose to cherry pick and argue about something IRRELEVANT, rather than what I am actually talking about.

I have tried (and failed) to communicate with other posters on the MT Stars forum, in hopes of getting others' opinions about the trade. Sorry for expressing myself in regard to being a new MT. Sorry I ever came to this forum to get advice or feedback. I'm only human. Farewell.

The attacks on you were utterly ridiculous. Guys IS gender neutral for the modern times but there are still some of the old guard mavens who lack understanding of what a "living" language is.

Just laugh it off.
It has nothing to do with the old guard - Old Pro
[ In Reply To ..]
and everything to do with proper business manners.
I am sorry but in the modern world, guys is gender neutral - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
This argument is ridiculous.

Guys is used every single day in the "business" world. I worked in-house for YEARS and people used the word guys to address groups from the top down to include the doctors, administrators, etc.

It has everything to do with the old guard who refuse to embrace a changing world and language. Business "manners" and acceptable language change, they simply do.

To the poster who said they would never hire anyone who used the word guys -- I would never want to work for someone that uptight, so it all works out fine.

No need to get offended? In other words, because you say so? Or because it is culturally acceptable to you? Or in your area?

Not everyone is culturally the same as you. They don't live in the same area, might not be the same ethnic background, and don't have the same education.

When someone tells you that they are offended by the words you use to describe them, the appropriate response is "I'm sorry, thank you for letting me know."

Telling them there was no need to get offended compounds the original offense. What may have been merely thoughtless becomes a deliberate offense. It also edges into verbal abuse, making the other person somehow responsible for the wrongness of the offense . . . "it's only a problem because you say so, and I don't respect what you say." Respect being the underlying concept here.

If you worked for my employer, you would find yourself having a chat with a supervisor about diversity and respect, and also about the unprofessionalism exhibited in making derogatory statements about your customers. Your comments about us guys may have offended us, but your comments about dictators damages the profession.

It is little wonder doctors go to voice recognition software and point-and-click templates . . . neither product posts rude opinions about them on the internet.

What this guy thinks - Going, going, gone

[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, those blabbing dictators telling long-winded stories about patients can be a real pain. Somebody had some kind of stage III cancer, now they have spine and brain mets, are the parent of 3 kids, have financial and social problems up the wazoo from this, some decisions have to be made about further chemo, radiation, surgery, whatever, code status, pain, palliative care, hospice, the outcome, the kids, yada, yada, yada. I agree it gets soooooo irritating to keep typing as they go on, and on, and on like the energizer bunny making a boring, irrelevant novel out of some short story. But hell, ya get paid for it. The more they blab on with such meaningless story-telling the more money ya get.

Going, going, gone - Jane

Thank you for framing this would-be MTs self-absorption in an accurate light. Not everybody is cut out to be an MT. One of the things require is compassion. Yes, COMPASSION. Clearly this person might do better in another field where her sensibilities do not have to be irritated by those unlike herself or who have needs she finds annoying. Poor baby.

ADDENDUM - Jane

Whoops, before the grammar cops come for me, I mean required, not require, and MT's, not MT. (I worked last night and am not quite awake. So sorry.)

People are way too sensitive - Thornbush

[ In Reply To ..]
As an MT, God forbid I make an observation about dictators... God forbid I make any observation at all! Most of the replies I have received on here are by people who get personally offended at anything I say, without even trying to see the big picture.

What I say is NOT against anyone here or against the dictators. I WAS MERELY MAKING AN OBSERVATION. Nothing more, nothing less. If people can't figure that out, please don't waste your energy playing the "diversity" and "offense" card. It's old, it won't work.

In today's society, especially politically correct United States, you can't say anything without literally offending people.

Well, maybe, but it happens more often if you are rude. - sm

You are just blaming others for the offense you caused.

I have found in my long life that taking responsibility for myself, my actions and yes, my feelings has really helped me. Please look at the possibility of owning your own behavior and feelings. Your posts do not portray you in a favorable light. I am sure you are a highly intelligent, educated person. Why not act like one?

If I am in wrong field, have been in it for way - too long, over 40 years and

I too get tired of dictators who just want to write a book and read every single report word after word after word. It is boring. I have 1 dictator who always (while eating dinner and smacking in my ears) repeats his review of systems and repeats sections of it at least 3-4 times every time he dictates. If people think for 1 minute I leave all the repeating they need to think again, do not do. I edit and take out the extra. He can say once and that is enough for the 1 report.

Do You Talk Out Loud To Your Dictators
Jul 26, 2012

I do.  My faithful dog who sits beside me all day must think I am talking to him, but sometimes when they say the most idiotic things I just feel compelled to respond out loud.  It does make me feel better.  On the flipside of that, I wonder if the dictators are thinking to themselves while dictating that they sure hope I don't leave any blanks so they have to fill them in. It would be fun (?) to get together with some doctors and have a session of "To Tell The Truth A ...

Lousy Dictators - Crappy, Hard To Understand Dictators, Both ESL And English-speaking

Farm Talk (A Bit Earthy)

Of course, this led to certain awkward questions, and in turn I received this memo under my cerea ...

Too Much Talk Of Striking Lately, But Can We As A Group Of MTs
May 10, 2012

Let's face it, striking will do no good.  Complaining about off-shoring has done no good, unless that will cease at a national level for all industries.  Complaining about pay is doing no good, since there is always an MT that will take a job at any rate.  What can we do? What if instead of a strike, all MTs did only the minimum line requirement for a week?  I think many, many MTs should go the Labor Board and file a complaint: If a company requires you to clock in an ...
