Burn Out - MTC

Posted: Oct 12, 2010

Anyone got any tips on how to avoid burn out? I am fairly new to MT and am getting burned out. Not good, I know since this is what I truely want to do.  I work 7 days a week and maybe that is part of it. Sitting down at my desk to work is becoming harder as I hate to walk in the room. I love what I do and love being home, but sometimes feel like I live in seclusion as I work all the time. Planning weekends has gone out the window. Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me? Any helpful advice for motivation or avoiding being burned out is appreciated.

Is there some way you could work less than 7 - days a week?

Maybe you can think of some way to rearrange your schedule so you at least have one day off every week.

but I've been doing this at home for 12 years. Just in the last 6-12 months I feel like I'm more confined than usual. I don't know what my problem is. My days are becoming longer because I don't get right at it in the morning like I used to. Seems like I don't have the free time like I did before, but it's obvious because of how my day goes. It's like I have ADD....I'm just not focused and I'm growing very tired of it!! Wish I could be more positive for you!!

Working 7 days a week at ANYTHING is going to affect your psyche.

Why are you working 7 days a week? Is it a necessity (as in you have your own accounts and no help)?

There are several things to help ward off burn-out-
* Make work a game. I can do xx reports in xx time. I can do all of Dr. A, then all of Dr. B, etc.

* Keep strict hours. You have to have time for your brain/body to regenerate and have down time. So, if you have to work on Saturday- Work 9-11 a.m. and 9-11 p.m. In those hours in between - PLAY!! Exercise. Hang out with the kids, do NOT think of work.

* Physical exercise helps wonders for EVERYTHING. Every couple of hours while you're working, get up and jog out to the mailbox or around the apartment or wherever but do it for 10 minutes.

* Meditation. Greatly underestimated in the power it has to make you able to cope with life.

I got burned out on MT a decade ago and left the field (mostly) and went to college then to grad school. Now I'm back doing MT and loving every minute of it again with a new appreciation.

EVERY occupation will burn you out, so make YOU a priority BEFORE work!!

Thanks to those who responded. I found the advice very helpful. I think I will make more time for me, and to have some downtime. My kids sure will love it and I can pay the bills to.

not really feasible to look for another job outside home. I live in a very small town and care for my aging mother who is not in the best of health. Right now I'm really feeling a major period of burn-out with transcription. Most days, I'm ready to throw my hands up and quit, just walk away from it, but then I see my checkbook laying on my desk as a reminder that I can't do that.
