Forgive me for asking, but - Saturday employees

Posted: Aug 10, 2013

how do you possibly get your work done when people are making up hours on your shift.  We can't "step on" anyone's shift during the week - big flaming no-no, but yet we are told to step on your Saturday shift? Crazy...

I've been trying to get on since about 8:00 this morning and haven't found any work yet. Kinda hard to make up hours huh?

Oh I don't blame you - blame the system

Please don't feel bad about it.

Yes, please stay off my Saturday, and my Sunday shifts. - need food

I am suffering bad because my shift is Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so I don't get any makeup days.

thankfully my TSM recently implemented policy that make up hours have to be claimed from shifts she puts on the Swap Board, not randomly at the discretion of the MT/MME. Since that was implemented, no problem with getting hours in for my scheduled shift.

wow someone uses the swap board - imagine it

When they first came out with the swap board I thought it was a good idea, but no one ever used it. I don't think most could even find it.

Using swap board - begs the question...

what on earth other job has anyone ever heard of where people are hired for shifts, diligently show up for their shifts only to find there is no work available during their scheduled times, and then told to mess around with a "swap board" which shows coverage, not necessarily actual available work, meaning you could swap and still not have work?

My solution: Eliminate "shifts" altogether. Supervisors text, IM or email work availability and coverage to workers who pick up work at max availability, ease off when work is light. When I first started doing this ages ago, it seems to me we used to get frequent updates like this 24/7; now we're lucky to get one update in the morning and that's it. At least this gives workers the feeling of choice that they are not chained to computers day and night, hoping and praying for work to come in.

"Benefits" such as health insurance and PTO could be tweaked and reviewed based on hours worked, quality, quantity or other criteria.

I think one of the main reasons this job became such a total mess is that now we are considered factory workers with an endless stream of widgets to produce. Once upon a time it might have been like that, but those days are apparently now long gone.
I'd give up my PTO in a second - to go back

I miss the flexibility I had. I hardly ever ran out of work and worked a pretty steady shift..But it was real nice when I was an insomniac to say you know what, I'll work now and get it out of the way instead of watching TV..and TAT never seemed to be a problem either

ADT Issue - Forgive If Already Discussed
Feb 03, 2012

I haven't been on DEP for very long and just recently we were told we had to duplicate all the physician's names on the ADT screen, including ones that are not in the data base?  Is this on a lot of accounts? ...

Okay, Gotta Vent...please Forgive Me

CRITICAL ERRORS - Okay, a patient comes into the hospital, gravely ill.  They take some xrays (I am radiology so I use that example). Maybe a CT or an MRI.  The radiologist is allerted this is a rush because the patient is so ill, he calls the report to the MD taking care of the patient to let him know what he sees.  Then, after he calls the report, he dictates it, and I type it...I make a mistake and put, lets say, no congestive heart failure noted, because he mumbles and talks ...

Coders, Please Forgive A Stupid Question, But
Jan 22, 2012

... how are coders paid?  What I really mean is, do you get wage/salary, or are you on production? Or does it depend on whether one does inpatient or clinic coding? I'm a longtime MT who has been seriously contemplating a career change to coding, and I'm now at the point to stop contemplating and start moving ahead. I'm willing to put in the effort/$$$ for good training (Andrews), and not seek shortcuts. If the coding profession means still being on some sort of production ...
