what kind of questions are these - Annie

DH had an interview last week. The 2 execs at the company was really excited, told him it's a great time to have applied, they have multiple openings and were excited about his background (he was well qualified for the job, having done it in the past). This week he had a "group interview". All women. The questions he was asked was....
1. What do you do in your spare time for fun.
2. What kind of music do you like
3. How do you feel about working with women.
None of those questions have anything to do with the job he applied for. I told him he should have answered them:
1. Stalk people over the internet.
2. Funeral.
3. I would rather club them over their heads and drag them into the cave to cook me something to eat.
Sheesh! I've never heard those kind of questions in an interview. He didn't get the job.
Sheesh is right! Sounds more like speed- - dating than an interview!

How does anyone know where they'll be in five years?
I'm tempted to tell them the truth: That I grew up during the Cuban Missle Crisis, and the fact that we could all be vaporized by nuclear war at any moment. I thought it was inevitable, and that I'd probably never even reach adulthood. So not surprisingly, I'm not very good at thinking more long-range than maybe a week or so.

If it is work that requires a lot of interaction with colleagues or any kind of teamwork, many companies will interview for social skills as well as job skills. They will often pass over the candidate with superior technical skills and select the one with adequate technical skills but the best personality fit. Technical skills can be improved through training. A bad fit for the company culture generally cannot be fixed and just leads to friction and poor morale in the long run.
As long as they are treating each applicant the same and asking the same questions of each applicant, they are probably not going to run into bias issues.
If your DH was irritated by the questions, it might have been a sign that he wouldn't be a good fit for the company culture, regardless of how good his skills might be. Had he been hired, he might not have been happy there.

Seriously - they are being dragged through this with us. They need their jobs just like we do. I am sure they don't like it and their kool-laid pitchers are empty but they have to play the game.
