for MTs leaving the transcription field, curious question . . . - mtt

Posted: Jan 04, 2010

Where are you going?  Are you staying in the medical field or something different?  Are you leaving home to go back to the office?  I am thinking about getting my RHIT certification to "change things up" and just want to know what other MTs are doing when they leave this business.  TIA

Now that my youngest daughter is in school full-time and I lost my at home MT job, I'm looking for in house work in the medical field either as an in house transcriptionist or medical secretary. I may go back to school to become an MA. Unemployment will pay for me to go back to school so if I can't find a job in the next few months, I'll look into that. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

for a long time, right now I have an associates and an LPN, though I let my licensure run out, I have been MTing for such a long time! How did you find the course as far as difficulty, and did you do it online or at campus?? Wish you all the best!!

It's an 18-month MSRN program at a local university. - sm

Nursing will always be around. Always. Can't outsource that one!

See if you can locate an LPN-to-RN transition program (should be about 3 semesters). Get your Associate RN. Then you can work and go through the Masters program: Nurse Anesthesia (really super competitive but incredible salaries) or Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Administration.

I'm 48 and if I can do this, you can! Make a viable, financially secure and rewarding career your priority. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for all the patients and their families you will be caring for.

Just Do It! (I should work for Nike! LOL)

Do you mean you are giving up this wonderful life as an MT - IAMT

to become a NP? WHY??

I have been round n round about what to do next. Finally decided to follow my heart and go with a degree in psychology to become a social worker or caseworker. I started on this road 20 years ago out of h.s. and wanted something short term and decided to go to school for MT'ing. It has spoiled me, being able to work from home, making over 40k per year, but the cushiness is gone. I'm following my heart and letting God do the rest.

Thank you to the nice person who emailed me the info on the medical billing and coding school. My dh erased it before I could reply to you.

Good luck in whatever you decide :)

My next job will (actually has been) as a travel agent. I've been at it for 3 years after finishing travel school. I can't yet retire from MT, as the travle industry took a nose dive with the current economy, but I'm working towards it.

Are you the Patti that knew some time ago...sm - vrvr

ALL the answers on the Word Help Board? All of a sudden you were gone and I wondered what had happened. Was this you?

Anyways, good luck in whatever you do next!

I'm starting at our local university next week, working towards a business administration degree in healthcare information systems (managing EMR systems). I wanted to do something that had good income potential and made my MT experience at least somewhat relavant.

Going back to school at 50........sm - m

I left the MT field in September 2009 and am currently working at a psychiatric hospital with plans to begin working toward my RN this year. Whatever path you choose, I wish you the very best.

Leaving MT - MT who knows

That is what I am doing . . . RN. . . taking the test and applying to the program with the program application due on April 1. I will have just about every general education completed, because I am three courses away from a B.S. degree in another discipline, but I've been taking the gen ed and distributive requirements in science, etc. in case I had to switch.

I am a little nervous about this RN thing, because it is such a change . . . I mean I told someone that leaving MT and the decision that it is not a sustainable field anymore is somewhat like a "death" because I've been doing it so long.

How is the RN thing going for you? Is a lot of the material familiar or material that you already knew? I think that I will enjoy the people contact, but what about the "gross" stuff? That kind of makes me a little nervous about it all, but it is a done deal and now I will have to make it work. In the years down the road, if at all I can use the RN degree and the B.S. degree in a healthcare-related industry like insurance, pharma, or medical device company maybe.

It's back to the office for me. I actually left a government job as a clerical supervisor in 1996 to be an IC because the money was actually better. Not so now. I'm on a management assistant list for our local county and hope to start interviewing soon. It can't happen soon enough. My pay checks lately have been abysmal. I'm so happy for all of you and the changes you're all making. There is no way but up for all of us. Happy New Year everyone!

To Those Leaving The MT Field
Mar 01, 2010

How long do you think MT'ing will be around?   I'm going back to school to become a social worker, something i've always wanted to do, and need the income while i'm in school.  In fact, today was my first day.  Its an online course and it will take some adjusting, but I feel its time.  I'm following a dream, MT'ing was supposed to be temporary but it is such a cushy job, who would want to leave it?   I think the problem is, there ...

Anyone Ever Regret Leaving MT Field?
Jul 31, 2013

To any former MT who has left the field: Have you ever regretted it and wished to come back or did come back? I've been an MT only 5 years and I feel stuck in which career path to go down. Done the whole pros and cons list of WAH versus outside work. I'm thinking that MT is not something I will be able to do until retirement 30 years from now. IDK if it's just a bad day/week for me or if I'm fickle and jump from job to job (longest job at one place was 4 years non MT). Lik ...

I thank ALL of you for your posts.  I think it has helped keep me sane.  I used to think I was one of the few dealing with constantly changing accounts, 6 or 7 at a time and the worse dictation on the planet!!!    I am not a gambling proponent, but I have started playing and I promise you if I win I want to set up something for the hardworking MT folk, and this is hard work.  This is no JOKE work.   Hang in there.  I've been praying that we make it unt ...

How Technology Killed The Medical Transcription Field
Aug 22, 2012

I wrote this essay about the negative impact VR and outsourcing has had on this field. I thought you guys might appreciate it.   HOW TECHNOLOGY KILLED THE MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION FIELD Long before I began working as a medical transcriptionist in 1993, others had been making a good living in the field for many years. For those unaware, medical transcriptionists (sometimes referred to as medical language specialists) are responsible for producing patients' medical records. Listening th ...

Leaving Transcription
Jul 30, 2012

I have the chance to take a job doing social work for the county in which I live.  I will be taking a pay cut that I can't really afford and I'm scared to death there will be budget cuts (as is happening in all government agencies), but there is also the chance there won't be cuts to this department and there will be chances for advancement, which I'm not seeing in transcription any longer.  How have you that have left gotten the strength to take the leap into the new and u ...

Seeking Suggestions/advice For Returning To Transcription Field
Nov 09, 2010

I have been out of transcription for almost 2 years.  Long story, but a combination of health problems coinciding with job loss due to cutbacks.  Anyway, I worked for 3 years transcribing for local multi-specialty clinics.  I realize now that was probably a mistake since everyone is hiring for acute care (which I have done but that was 10 years ago).  I have recently seen some companies that are hiring for clinic transcription, but I need to "refresh" my knowledge and skills ...

Anyone Leaving Medical Transcription?
Nov 15, 2014

I've been a medical transcriptionist for 16 years now since graduating from high school.  I am looking for motivation to finally leave medical transcription.  I need to do this for my family and to get myself out of this unbelievable rut I am in.  I am interested in going to school for nursing, so I'm thinking of trying to work in a store or a similar job for the three years I would be in college.  I just don't know how easy this transition will be as the one i ...

QC Leaving?? Leaving More Work For MTs?
Jun 14, 2015

Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us.  Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers??? Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work.   From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

MT Field
Oct 27, 2009

Don't you wonder why when you were in school you were told about how many jobs there were out there, how your income was endless and depended on how much work you wanted to do? I do have a job, not one that I can live off of, I earn about $200 every other week, but still, at least I have a job. I look at the job board and see how many people have viewed each job and wonder...at least it is just not me, where is the work? I wish that when I was researching school and such that they woul ...

What would be the best way to get into another field? I have been doing neurology now for about 6 years and I am very interested in getting into something else, and really this is the only field I know because I havent had practice with anything else.  Im just getting kind of bored with the neurology lingo.  If I were to apply for a job that is hiring in a different field, would they consider me a "newby"? How Many Of You Really Left The Field
Mar 03, 2010

I'm just curious is all.  I've been reading for months a lot of posts of people who are unhappy, their going to leave, telll their bosses off, they deserve more, etc, etc.  It's literally been going on months.  I have a job I like, it pays lower than all the people here say they get paid, but I like it.  There are times we run out of work, but I make due (and I'm a one income family, so is distressing sometimes), but  I like my doctors and my supervis ...

What Attracted You To The MT Field?
Mar 07, 2010

I didn't know what I wanted to do.  I was very independent and a home body.  I'm also very disciplined and prefer to work alone.  When I made more than my friends with degrees, I stayed...I feel like a criminal for how much I got paid for how little I do.  Easy money, ability to stay home, no managers lurking over shoulder.  We are the last man on the totem pole here in the medical "profession" and we are getting cut out.  It was too good to last forever. ...

Mar 26, 2010

You know the MT field is bad when even the fly-by-night "work-at-home" make $20 an hour companies don't even advertise for MT anymore.  My husband has been job hunting and we've been checking the online job search engines daily.  I haven't seen one single ad like we used to see on the matchbook covers.  Now they have a different scheme.  It's all work at home in call centers and make $20 an hour.      ...

I am going to be anonny as I do not want people to know who I am and call me lazy or whatever they decide to call me.  I lost a job not long ago, found another one for peanuts, but am going to turn them down as I can get more unemployment.  Plus with unemployment, I know how much I can count on each week.  It is steady.  I know it will not last forever, but....  I am just tired of the stress and worry of is there going to be any work.  At least now I know how much I ...

What Happened To Our Field?
Mar 23, 2011

Why can't it just go back to the way it was? Those of us who have been transcribing for 20+ years are kind of hurting now, or anyway I am. I used to have a service, had no middle men, no corporate people to support. This was back in the 80's, and the only limitations I had were demographics. If I took work too far away, I had to have more and more delivery people, but at that time, there were only a hand full of transcriptionists.  Those were the days of "a line is a line", "pica ...

My Observation About This Field...
Apr 26, 2011

I have been a working MT (IC status) for 5 years now.  I am finally making pretty good money, but I have always worked around kids and had to take the first few years slowly.  I file jointly with my husband and even had him get more deductions taken out of his checks.  This year, after deductions, I was able to get an 1800.00 refund.  I consider this good considering I didn't pay anything all year (quarterly).  Here is my observation...it seems the the MT field is a ...

Another Dying Field...

I hope you'll watch this video about photojournalists.  It's very interesting all on its own, but particularly how the major news agencies are refusing to pay for professional quality and using free amateur photos instead. When Looking For A Non-MT Job In Medical Field
Dec 29, 2012

Do you use the title of MLS instead of MT? Is that the more appropriate title we have now according to AHDI? Do recruiters or office personnel know what an MLS is or what we do?
