ageism - how to get around it

Posted: Jan 02, 2014

I am about to start applying (again) for a job, and I am 64.  Has anyone ever lied about their DOB on an application, and can a company check this?  I have lost a job that looked solid before when I gave my DOB.  Any help would be appreciated!!

I would not lie about my age, because if they do check it and find it different, they could let you go, stating you falsified your application. I have been down the same road and when I apply for something online, I tell them that I am a senior, because I am usually looking for part time work, not full time and don't need the benies any longer. I was all set for a job as well when I was 55; most experience, tested almost 100%, etc. and didn't get the job. That was my first run in with "my age." I think it may depend on the kind of job you want too; I see a lot of seniors working at different places and they are in their 60's as well. Good luck. It is hard to find a job at 40 anymore. It is just difficult with anything anymore it seems!

Your birthday doesn't belong on your application ANYWHERE. It's illegal for anyone to ask how old you are other than are you older than 18. So there should be no need to lie.

Give the last 10-12 years experience on your application if you think age is an issue. Frankly, I haven't found age to be an issue in transcription. I'm nearly 60 and have seen no evidence of age being an issue at all.

So true; they don't ask for birthdate, but sometimes year of graduation or your job history can give them a hint too. I agree, only put down last 10 years of working experience. I do feel that transcription is one job that does not discriminate over age. Most "seasoned" MTs are well into their 50s and 60s and beyond as we all started out when this was a good job. In the outside world, it may make a difference though. Just keep trying, be truthful, but vague! If you can do the job and do it well, age should not be a factor, but that doesn't always cut it. You just have to apply, apply and apply; sooner or later something will come through.

Avoiding Ageism

Can you avoid ageism by changing your DOB on job applications? I need to change jobs and do not want my age getting in the way of getting a new job. TIA! ...
