Treadmill desks - Margaret

Posted: May 30, 2010

Is there a way to do transcription using a treadmill desk. I can't think of a way to adapt the foot pedal control, maybe something that went under my arm or something.

With some software, you can set "hotkeys" to run your audio files (start/stop and rewind). For instance, in WAVPedal, it's pretty easy. Mine is set up with function keys that "replace" the foot pedal functions. Can't tell you for sure whether it can be done with other software; just check in the "options."

Philips Hand Control - Model #40022
The Philips LFH-2305 Hand Control slides under the keyboard and replaces the foot pedal with thumb switches. This unique product is the ideal accessibility option for PC-based transcription but also finds a place with transcriptionists looking for additional ergonomic options. This control requires an available USB port.

I didn't know they still made those. I think it was SONY who made the one I had many years ago. I found that my hands are more talented than my feet, so it worked well for me.

Trained and used one of these in teh beginning, 30+ - sm

years ago, absolutely loved it. That was when we used typewriters instead of computers.

I made one up myself--I bought a treadmill at Salvation Army for 99 dollars and then put a sofa table in front of it, my monitor (elevated on a box) and CPU on the the sofa table, the keyboard fit perfectly on the treadmill with the mouse. I did QA and editing that way---not transcription. Not sure I could pull that off. It as great. The actual treadmill desk systems are expensive..something like 5000.00.

Not a treadmill, but a mini stair-stepping machine that cost less than 50 bucks at the sporting goods store on sale, as I recall.... To use it, I had to put everything up on boxes, and the mouse went on a plastic trash can with a plastic kitchen cutting board set on top of it to provide a flat surface.

Right now I can't use the system because I badly, BADLY need new glasses, and just can't see the monitor well enough unless I'm sitting down. (My vision benefits don't kick in for another month, and I am NOT paying full price for glasses, not at these wages!) I'm going to try it again when I have better glasses.

Before I got the stepping machine, I just pushed back my chair, raised everything on boxes--and marched in place on the floor. So in fact you don't actually need anything at all to exercise while working....

I have also heard of people replacing their chairs with a balance ball, because of all the constant movements you have to do to stay balanced, which supposedly helps strengthen the core. I have no actual knowledge of whether that is an effective method of exercising while working, though.

I have used the balance ball and it makes for a break from the chair anyhow. It did take some practice to get used to it and be able to sit/bounce and type. I am hyper an dit helped me alot.

Standing Desks
Jun 08, 2014

I am just wondering if any MTs out there have tried these standing desks that seem to be so popular.  I get the general idea that sitting all day is bad for you, but I am just not sure this works for our line of work.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  ...

Treadmill Desk
Nov 22, 2013

Hello!  I have been an MT for going on 10 years now and have been thinking about a standing desk.  However, I have a tendency to stand in a way that I end up hurting the outsides of my feet.  I had an idea for a treadmill desk, but I'm stuck on the foot pedal issue and noise level.  I did a search and found a post on MTstars by someone who said it wouldn't' work because treadmills are too loud and one wouldn't be able to hear the dictation.  My work a ...

If They Can Dictate On A Treadmill,
Apr 22, 2015

does anyone know a way to edit/transcribe on a treadmill?   I can hear her footfalls and the sound her tennis shoes make on the belt.  Would be a great way to get my walking time in and not be so sedentary (especially with doing OT).   Not good at the keyboard commands to work audio so would need my footpedal.  ...
