Hi,

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who can help me out. I've been working for the same company for 3 years as an IC. I'm thinking of search for a new company that is employee-based from home so I can have taxes taken out and possibly get paid more than I am working for now.

Has anyone gone from IC to employee from home and if so how did you like it compared to being an IC?

It seems like it would be nice to have my insurance, etc taken care of. I love being an IC but sometimes the finances are stressful .. and I'm tired of stressing out about taxes! :)

I have only gone from employee to IC and would much rather be IC. I have found that you typically get paid less as an employee than IC and, as I'm sure you already know, you also have to follow their schedule and totally lose your freedom. When I lost my last job as IC, I DREADED the thought of possibly having to work as an employee again; thank goodness I found a job as an IC. I would much rather worry about taking care of my own taxes and have my freedom.

I see it another way. I love being an employee because I know I'll get paid whether I have work or not. I don't necessarily love the set schedule, but being home makes it easier. I have 5 weeks vacation, a 501K, OT pay. I have a friend who's an IC and she loves it, but she had to pay a lot of money to the IRS for taxes and when she has no work she doesn't get paid which can be hard, and she has to pay for her own insurance. I guess it just depends on what's more important to you.

I'm going to miss my freedom but the 401k, benefits, and vacation pay are more important to me now .. I cant afford to live on what I'm making/paying out of pocket for things anymore. .. Sad but true :(

I work for a local cardiology practice. You start out with 3 weeks paid vacation plus 4 floating holidays and then it increases after that. After I believe 10 years, you get 7 weeks paid vacation.

Good luck in your search. Hopefully you'll find something soon that's a good match for you. It's not to say it's all sunshine. We have a transcriptionist who is the "lead" and she's always in everyone's business. She basically has no life but work. But at least I don't have to look at her in-house. :)

I have had one job as an employee out of 4 MT jobs that I have had over the years, but I didn't like it because I did NOT get paid if there was no work on my shift, but I still had to sit there at the computer in case of stats. At least now if there is no work I can do what I want with the time.

I've been an IC MT for 10+ years and, as such, I have no benefits, but LOVE the flexibility of being able to do what I want/need during the day as long as the work gets done on time. I keep trying to find something definitive that spells out the differences between the two, but it all seems so vague or, at least, different companies seem to treat each differently. Specifically, since my company recently converted everyone over to statutory status, can they require the employees to set and maintain a strict schedule as they had when they were full-time regular employees, or should/do the statutory employees have more leeway in that regard, more along the lines of an IC? ...
