Soliciting physicians for work, help needed! - KT

Posted: Jan 14, 2010

I need some help.  I have many, many years in the industry with transcription, VR editing, QA and auditing and I have decided to cut out the middle man (the transcription companies) and solicit physicians on my own for work.  My problem is not knowing the going rates to charge.  I know they are low, but how low.  The transcription companies are paying us very low rates, but how can I find out what the dr's are actually paying, so I dont cause the market to drop even further by bidding too low, or even worse, lose prospective clients by bidding too high for their work?  Can someone help me figure out how much is a reasonable rate to charge the physicians?  I have figured out how I will solicit the physicians, I'm just not sure how much to charge them.  Please give me some sort of answer, I dont want to cause the rates to go even lower!

I consider that a trade secret - J

That's like asking the competing coffee shop how much they pay for their coffee, and where do they get it? I wouldn't tell you that! If it were that easy, wouldn't we ALL be asking and going out and undercutting the MT companies and independent contractors?

That makes sense when you put it that way, thanks - KT

Ok, that makes perfect sense to me. I was worried about not charging enough or charging too little, but I think it is basically what I can get from your reply. Thanks

Actually, when I ask others what they charge, I dont - underbid; instead I charge slightly MORE. NM

Your hourly rate will depend on where you are located and how many years of experience you have.

You can use Google or Bing to search for "medical transcription salary" and you will find Web sites that can help you.

The Department of Labor Web site provides information at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm#earnings.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

in-house and charge $22 an hour. Another office doing IME's from home I get 13 cpl, 14.5 for STATs needed on my "off" time (both of these part-time). I also work for an MT company as employee part-time and get 9 cpl. I think 13 cpl as IC is too low, but not many paying much more than that these days, also not many paying by the hour. It depends on where you live what you can get and I would research the going rates in your area.

Do The Physicians Know What We Do?
Mar 23, 2012

During all the eating, nose blowing, just sitting there and reading the chart, talking to the patient and office personnel, and accepting phone calls during their dictation, do they realize there is a person on that dictation line?  Do they even know what we do? I have a couple doctors who do this constantly!  It is not so bad if I am typing, but on VR all of this chatting and phone calling comes in on their dictation and has to be deleted constantly!!  Frustr ...

Physicians Doing EMR
Mar 23, 2014

I have noticed my regular doctor's office using EMR and it is used by the nurses more or less with the point/click stuff, not too much "major typing" but still aggravating that I have to sit there while they input their data.  BUT, I took my child to a specialist last week and the physician himself was using EMR and it wasn't such a user friendly point and click thing going on, he had to type SENTENCES at the time.  These sentences he was typing were achieved by him using his ...

Physicians Choice, New MTs Pay Them?
Jan 11, 2010

I found a company called Physicians Choice Transcription Service (PCTSI) which says they take newbies but you pay them money weekly as a payroll deduction.  You start out paying them $100/week.  Does anyone know anything about this kind of service?  I've been looking for work for weeks and have seen several places want "start up costs" in the thousands, but never a place that takes $100 a week from your pay when you work for them. http://www.pcts1.com/Employment.htm Has it ...

Physicians And Billing
Feb 02, 2013

I see a lot of my clients as a patient. I have health insurance, which states that they accept a certain payment from that insurance as full payment. However, certain clients do balance billing, which is illegal. Balance billing is basically billing you personally for the amount over what they accepted as payment from that insurance company as an in-network physician. If this were not my client, I would refuse to pay; however, since they are my clients, I have no choice. How would they feel if ...

Interesting Statistics Regarding ESL Physicians
May 08, 2011

If you think you are getting more and more ESL dictators, you are probably right.  According to a public website, there were 2130 Visa petitions/applications and 748 Green Card petitions/applications for PHYSICIANS for the year 2010 alone.  That does not include all the ESL physicians that came into the United States over the previous years.  Yes, some applications were denied, but why do these hospitals feel they need that many foreign physicians to begin with.  If you are ...

Why Bad EMRs Are Forced On Physicians By Edwin Leap, MD

from KevinMD website "I recently did a tally.  Since starting my locums adventure last year, and going to full-time locums in January, I’ve worked in a grand total of 11 emergency departments.  Let me qualify that for the occasional visitor to my blog.  I decided to do this for purposes of flexibility, finances and a much needed change of scenery.  Not because I’m a problem physician, or unable to do the work in a “real” job.  I say that to ...
