I do completely straight typing & have abbreviations in my computer that I use.  I add to them but would like to know how people are increasing their line counts and get 20,000+ with straight typing in 80 hours (2 weeks)??  Any input would be appreciated!  TIA

I have worked with a girl who can do that. She is very, very focused, does not answer the phone, and is focused enough to sit there for 8 hours and do nothing but type. I have trouble focusing, for example, I will suddenly be checking E-mail, etc., a huge time waster.

you have to have a really good system for your shortcuts and use a lot of "combination" shortcuts. for instance, if you used "lam" for "laminectomy," then use "llam" for "lumbar laminectomy," "clam" for "cervical laminectomy," etc. I try to keep my shortcuts for the most part to 4 characters or less. and I shortcut EVERYTHING, not just medical words. example - hhb = he has been, hd = he denies, hdn = he does not. you really have to have a good system.

I agree, my shortcut system is almost an identical theory - The simpler, the better

"Cly" = cervical lymphadenopathy, etc. I try to keep the shortcuts as brief in abbreviation as possible so as to keep saving as many keystrokes as possible throughout the entire report, LOL!

in 10s and more 10s of thousands, I had to settle for longer abbreviations, both to fit them all in and also to accommodate systems that allow me to remember the system instead of the abbreviation. For me, the simplicity's now in a rememberable system.

It works, though, SAT. My expander tells me that for my main accounts it's "typing" about 52% of the completed report, higher for best worktypes, worse for new dictators, way worse for new accounts. That's double my without-expander speed. (That's also before the additional lines I get from use of templates.)

Whatever kind of expander you have, SAT, it probably gives you this sort of information. I'd work on bringing that percentage up. It's sort of like having someone working as you do, but you get her paycheck.

BTW, I really do find all these text entries extremely useful in editing, couldn't do without; but I think if I were fairly new to expanders right now I'd go straight into all editing so I didn't need the expander skill developed so much. It should be possible to bring speed up to what's needed today much faster in editing, concentrating especially on creating shorts to perform all the typical corrections: text, formatting, punctuation, QA--all of it.

(That is, assuming editing wasn't underpaid compared to transcription at whatever company I was at. As we all know, a lot of companies have overestimated the increase in speed we'd see doing VR and many of us don't want to do it as a result. That's true for me these days, too, and I like VR and have been doing it almost as long as it's been around.)

In order to get fast faster, I'd also probably be picking entries off a list on the screen instead of keeping that window closed and relying entirely on my system (I like to keep my eyes on the text, which is nice for speed). A guy at Shorthand once told me oldies (before list windows were developed) are more likely to keep the window closed, while people who cane along after expanders became more sophisticated rely on the lists. Makes sense, especially as we're going to be seeing a lot less straight transcription in future. But I'd still develop a very good system to minimize the reliance and keep my eyes where they earn the most money for me.

I've been approached by a local physician to take over his transcription.  He dictates from home right now, into his computer.  I think maybe with EMDAT?  My guess would be that the voice files are created and held somewhere, and his current company/transcriptionist goes in and gets them and somehow transcribes and sends them back via the computer.  Anyway, I've been out of the loop for long enough that I'm searching for a low cost, easy way to get his files to ...

I Love This Coding Forum!

The people on this coding forum are so pleasant and helpful. If someone gets cranky, it only seems to last for a minute and, unlike many other forums, people don't jump in and start battles. Also, people don't seem to get so defensive or take things personally the way they do in other places. There is an enormous amount of helpful information here and we get to see more than one side of everything, without battles. People respect each other's opinions even when they disagree. Thi ...

For Larger Print When Reading Forum
Aug 09, 2014

When reading this forum or when on ANY Internet site, if you are having trouble because the print is too small, hold down your Ctrl key while using the scroll on the mouse. Moving the mouse "wheel" up will enlarge the print; moving the mouse wheel down will make it smaller. This pretty much works on anything except for e-mails. Don't forget to keep the Ctrl key held down while you are doing this. ...
