Neck and shoulder discomfort from transcribing - anon

Posted: Nov 30, 2011

I know we shoud sit as ergonomically as possible while transcribing, but I am still having considserable neck and shoulder pain.  Does anyone have any suggestions; exercises, changes in equipment, position, etc.?  This has gotten progressively worse over the years.  I do work long hours - sometimes 12 to 16 at a time.  Yesterday I finally threw in the towel and started a course of prednisone.  Something has to work better than a constant array of steroids.  TIA!

When I was at the keyboard a lot, I wore this thing called a "Bed Buddy" (No, not THAT kind of bed buddy) around my neck. It is the brand name for this thing you buy in Walgreen's. It looks like a large rice sock. You heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes and wrap it around your neck. I frequently wore it all day! They are about 10 bucks and are way worth the money. I hope you feel better soon.

An alternative to the "bed buddy" - Old Pro

My sister, who sews, made me what she calls a "rice sock" one Christmas. It is simply a sleeve of cotton fabric sewn up with rice in it. You use it the same way you use the "bed buddy"--put it in the micro for 2 minutes and you're good to go. I think making one is a lot cheaper than the 10-15 bucks they get for theirs at Walgreen's.

was to put my monitor up on a "riser." Initially I used my Dorland's, then I bought a "real" monitor riser with a little storage drawer. Having to tip your head forward even a small amount can cause a lot of pain, in my experience!

During the spring, I was experiencing horrible neck and back pain. I tried everything (including rice sock and Unkers). I finally went to the doctor. It was a combination of poor posture, toting around my grandkids, and H. pylori (which was contributing to my back pain). Anyway, I never thought about it, but I could see how raising my monitor so I'm looking straight on instead of down would definitely help with my neck pain. I'm certainly going to give it a try. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUGGESTION:-)

I had to go to the urgent care for terrible neck and shoulder pain over the summer; eventually the only position in which I could be comfortable was the "rag doll." Hot yoga worked miracles.

I had the same problem and raising the monitor, as suggested, was all it took -it made a huge difference not having to look downward but straight ahead.

If you wake up with the pain, a pillow to support the neck would probably help. The Bedbuddy didn't work for me (too high a pillow) but another one that was flat with a raised area to support the neck worked.
