Meaningful Use? - tynkerbelle

We received an e-mail today about "Meaningful Use" and the EMR.  Apparently the doctors are supposed to input their own reports for the hospital to get paid and soon we will be out of a job?

Please google "meaningful use" to find out what it is about.

It does not require that doctors input their own reports, although the EHR your hospital uses might facilitate that.

The medical record and the reports in it are not just there "to be paid." They are there for patient care.

EHRs are nothing new. Neither are the meaningful use provisions. But, yes, they are driving a lot of change in healthcare that is resulting in job loss by MTs. You very likely WILL be out of a job. That is why for the past 2 or 3 years we have been telling you on this board to retrain in another career and find a better job.

You need to stay aware of what is going on in the industry so that you can adapt, change, and plan.

Meaningful use- yes reports - are for patient care

but if you look at the page for meaningful use, you will see there a large incentive for facilities to use the EHR meaningful use. The bottom line is $$ no matter how others try to sugar-coat it.

You are not talking to a bunch of 2-year-olds, stop talking down to people and making statements such as "we have been telling you for 2 or 3 years..." Who is "we?" How do you know that people will be out of a job? You are speaking to people as if you think they are all unaware. Your last sentence, once again, sounds very preachy.

I suppose every place is different, but the hospital will get paid regardless of whether the doctors input their own reports or whether someone transcribes dictation. At my facility, we have a mix - some doctors prefer to straight dictate, some use Dragon and a few input their own. Your facility has to show that they are meeting certain "meaningful use" guidelines which involve patient care, use of an EMR, coding, billing and other documentation. Allowing patients on line access to portions of their medical record is a meaningful use initiative. This all involves Medicare reimbursement and incentives for facilities to come on board with EMRs. They don't have to use them at all, but they will lose income and pay fines over time. If the hospital chooses to eliminate MT, it is money driven but all kinds of things come into play. Using the EMR as the reason is just a convenient excuse. There are a lot of other jobs for MTs though which involve working with the EMR. If you are on site, it might be worth investigating.

That about sums it up. It happened at the - clinic I used to work for. :(

It's why MTSO's are starting to branch out into other endeavors.

They started outsourcing a little at a time but kept in-house staffing with a hiring freeze in place. Then, when the EMR went fully functional, we still had a number of providers who wanted to dictate narrative reports, but instead of keeping us they outsourced it all so it would have happened anyway, we just weren't cost effective anymore. Now, we have 2 onsite staff who fix mistakes and do stats, that's about it. I've been curious about the cost savings but I'll probably never know.

Meaningful Use

read the article in the link -- has more to do with physicians and the next "meaningful use" level; pretty interesting regarding coming requirements, the big companies involved with software, etc.  Not pertinent directly to MT but I found it interesting just the same.  sorry if I should have put this on some other board (I work for Nuance).  ...

Interesting article about stage 2 meaningful use, particularly committees trying to decide if it prohibits anyone but a physician entering data into the EMR.  The article specifically references scribes, but I wonder what the implications are for MT. http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news/do-doctors-have-be-typists-get-mu-incentives ...

New EMR Mandate "meaningful Use"
Apr 29, 2011

I am jujst starting to research this issue and wondering if anyone here has any information on how this affects us as MTs.  The EMR I am currently working in is Medent and they are trying to comply with this new mandate.  For me this means the docs point and click on the assessment/diagnosis.  Then I type the dictated Plan/Comments.  both these fields are printed out for the patients in compliance with the 'meaningful use" which says that the patient will have to be prov ...
