Just my take on what MTing has become - Thinking out loud - very long

Posted: Jan 21, 2012

I used to make $50,000 a year also.  Then it went down into the 40s.  Now, I think it may be something like $35,000 to $38,000, depending on different factors.  I have given this much serious thought because I am in my 50s and would like to hold out for another few years and not have to start a new career this late in life.

I think between the "AAMT" and the offshoring, this profession has been brought to its knees.  The offshoring has not worked out too well for many companies because the work had to be redone, or the client did not want that in the first place.  They wanted good quality work at offshore prices.  So then comes VR, which IMO has not really been perfected yet.  In theory, it is a good idea and the answer to the problems.  However, reality is a different matter.  There are horrid platforms that prevent an MT from moving fast enough to make any money even though it is VR.  No one should be paid less than 6 cpl for VR, even on the best platform.  I struggle making those bottom keys my new "home" for my fingers, but maybe it will come with more time.  All those headings, which we do not get paid for, still have to be done.  It appears they want a lot of key clicking, normals, and cutting and pasting which is much work, and very few lines paid for.

This is indeed a weeding out process of old MTs like me who are used to getting paid for a large production of lines that result in professional quality reports.  This does not seem to matter anymore.  They want to take that away from us however they can.  I do 50% VR and 50% typing.  The system is suppose to only allow reports on VR with 80% or better accuracy, but who decides the 80% - the system, which is usually in error by at least 20% or more.  Even so, this means that the best reports, with easy dictators end up on VR.  This would be okay if the pay were 6 cpl or better.  All of the crap dictators remain on the straight typing, at a higher rate, but it takes you longer to do them.

The old jobs at 9-11 cpl or better are going fast, as well as the MTs who used to do them.  I have looked and researched.  Clients just don't pay that much anymore.  I only have 7 more years that I need the higher income and I figure with the state of the economy, where I live, where I am in my life, I will accept the approximate $38,000 to $40,000 I am getting.  If that dries up before I do, I will have to work on getting my own clients I guess.  I don't know, but I believe I could work as hard as I do now, getting all the money from the client without a middle-man (MTSO) taking the money that I could be able to afford my taxes and benefits.   I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it, but I will definitely refuse to work for a company who does not provide full time work.  THIS IS A JOB.  We are not here because we have nothing better to do.

I believe that somehow in the next 5-10 years, the companies who off-shore, over-hire, and have MT employees who sit at their computers half the day with no work are going to lose qualified employees, thus making their business fall off.  At some point in the not too distant future, this scenario will just not be acceptable.  Sure, there are MTs who will do it now, and will accept a very low rate of pay, but I don't believe the MTSOs are going to be able to ride that gravy train very long.  The  tables will turn, and the MT industry will evolve into something different again.   It will be too late for me at that point of course.

MTing is just not what it used to be, and never will be again.  It requires a different mindset, skill, and of course less money, but still good money if you work hard and refuse to accept the situations many find themselves in now.  MTs will demand work - or leave.  The wages????  What is rock bottom?  And how many are going to be willing to take it just to work at home?

I refuse to let any company/client cheat me out of making the money I know I am worth.  I will not stay.  The account I have - I AM LUCKY.  When is my luck going to run out?  Considering my hours, my schedule of M-F 8-4, no holidays, nights or weekends, my pay, I have good benefits, my company is very fair, and I always have work, I guess I would estimate my worth at $34,000 or above (subject to change).

Just curious.  What do you consider yourself worth?  What is your rock bottom number?

As I stated below in another post, my income was about the same - as yours until recently, sm

Too many factors to consider in this equation. I have 2 children, so supporting them and trying to give them some of the things they want as well as what they need is always a factor in my financial decisions. We live pretty modestly as it is, but with the prices of everthing one actually NEEDS to survive in this world (housing, utilities, food), my worth (as well as many others) is definitely not what I am being paid. The Department of Agriculture estimates around $9000 a year to raise 1 child. Do the math. Those of us trying to support 2 or more children have been brought to the slaugterhouse by all of these changes in the MT business and it seems now that we are just waiting for the axe to fall. I worry about it every day. Each day is a constant gamble as to whether this day will be productive enough to help support myself and my family. It's a sad, sad situation. Of course, my income is better than some, but the fact still remains, it is not what it used to be, and I certainly have every intention of not joining the ranks of being below poverty level (hence, hanging on as this job is paying me more at the present time than I would be making at Walmart or McDonald's).

You forgot a MAJOR factor. - Amy

MT won't even be around in another 5 years or so.

There are many factors contributing to its decline, but the coup de grace is OBAMACARE. Industry experts predicted that it would drive many docs to retire, which it has. The ones who are left are going BROKE already, and ObamaCare hasn't entirely kicked in yet. The handful of very highly trained specialists (Ivy League level) have already relocated their practices overseas or have plans to do so in the near future. The "elite" American plastic surgeons, cardiologists, etc. still practicing will be living somewhere like Dubai, serving heads of state from around the world.

The U.S. model they are pursuing is to have all the docs clustered, practicing in a hospital complex setting. There won't be individual, free-standing doctors' offices except in the expensive zip codes.

Eventually (who knows when), EVERYONE who has a job will be working for the federal government or a megacorp. There will be no more smaller or mid-sized private companies. Look around -- they are driving smaller and mid-sized private companies OUT OF BUSINESS, and that is what they WANT. Eventually the ONLY companies left standing will be the international, megacorporations. Working for them, you will truly be a SLAVE.

That sounds like a bit of hysteria to me - nm

Your reaction is not surprising. I have made statements that contradict what you believe to be true.

While most people watch their "soaps" on TV and read romance novels, I read the books written by the "elites" outlining their plans. I have been doing that for YEARS. They have outlined this clearly in their books going back decades! But the vast majority of folks want to be "entertained" so don't read those "boring" books.
Wow, condescending much? - Elites?
[ In Reply To ..]
Give me a break. Wait. Better yet, give me the titles of some of these books written by the "elites" like yourself.
Comprehension problem much? - Amy
[ In Reply To ..]
You have some kind of comprehension difficulty. I never said that I was an "elite" or authored the books, merely that I read them. If, because of your own inferiority, you read a condescending tone into my post then that is YOUR problem.

Your having to ask who the "elites" are just proves the point! Do some Googling, and you can start with a prominent former National Security Advisor to a certain president. That is a HUGE CLUE, but I'm willing to bet that you still can't figure it out due to your lack of knowledge.

Not my problem; again, it's YOURS.
and many very educated people have put out books that predict sm - Chicken Little

the end of the world. Guess what? They've been wrong about that too.

I agree Amy. I don't read the books but I listen to alternative media on the internet and you are pretty much right on. The elitists are taking down America and soon the only jobs will be working for the government and being in security will be big like at the airports the TSA and prisons etcf. We will all become dependent on the government for everything. Ever hear of Alex Jones. He has it right. Ron Paul is the only answer left for America. If we get another Obama, i.e. Mitt Romney, we will get four more years of the same old thing only will continue to get worse. America is being destroyed as we speak now and healthcare is also being destroyed.

Umm... - sm

Not sure where you have been but the scenario you have mentioned about all doctors being clustered, practicing in a hospital complex setting, and freestanding doctors' offices has been around for a long time. Not sure why you blame Obama for this.

Revolution - sm

History says that this is when revolution usually comes, you know. People get tired of their governments trying to micromanage every little aspect of their lives and the rebel.

You got it made in the shade. I could handle your job very nicely and have a life.

Mting
Nov 21, 2009

I have been transcribing for 20 years, but most of it was Radiology and Pathology for hospitals. They were pretty laxed with errors. Now I am in the big leagues and I am getting QAed to death! But I am learning a lot. I also have ESLs to deal with now so it is taking time to build up my speed. I just started here 2 months ago. I am fast, but I need to learn also. It is challenging. I got spoiled doing specialties. ...

is the best 2-year and 4-year degree to go after these days?  I can no longer support myself and my daughter on my wage as an MT.  Lost my house to foreclosure which was a huge wakeup call.  Decided to go back to school but don't want to waste my time on a dead-end career.  ...

How Much $ Would It Take For You To Leave MTing?
Oct 12, 2010

I love my job, I do well at it.  I am $45,000 give or take a couple thousand every year.  I am losing my account to VR, and I will have to switch accounts.  I will not be able to make as much on the new accounts, probably a 25% pay cut.  I have a job interview this afternoon for a job in a doctor's office doing routine front desk duties.  I don't know how much it pays.  What if they ask me how much I am looking for?  I don't know what to say.&nb ...

MTing In An RV On The Road
Mar 18, 2011

I'm interested in chatting with anyone who might be doing MT work on the road in an RV or motorhome.  This might be in my future soon and I am curious about the logistics of this.  I've been working at home for 19 years so would love to keep this great job while seeing some sights in the USA and still working. Please get in touch if you have any information! Thanks   ...

MTing NOT DEAD
Nov 22, 2011

MT'ers transcription may not be dead after all.  I had an interview with a local hospital that has many clinics and outside services.  They have had all of their transcription outsourced aside from various departments in the actual hospital.  However, they have discovered a better quality of work if they keep their work onsite.  They are pulling ALL of their services back to using on-site transcriptionists.  Some at home work after training, but there will be no MTS ...

I Want Out Of MTing, Question Though

I want to work in health care IT, but I'm not exactly sure which degree to go for.  I keep seeing health care informatics and I see programs for them, but it seems to me that these are degrees that prepare you to become a RHIA.  I already have an AA degree and have my RHIT certification, but I want to work more in technology, specifically health care technology.  Maybe a computer science degree or ......?? ...

Steno Machine And MTing
Oct 16, 2009

I have been using a steno machine to do this job since the year 2000.  I would have a difficult time returning to typing on a QWERTY board for MT'ing...way too slow and painful on the hands, etc.  On a good day on a familiar account, I can produce 250 lines an hour, no sweat.  I was trained in school to reach 225 words per minute, which I did back in 1992, to qualify to take the California state board exam.  I would encourage anyone to take the time and effort to learn s ...

Getting Out Of MTing, Looking Into Health Informatics

I am getting out of MT and looking into the Health Informatics program.  I have a 2 year degree in HIT, but my problem is I don't know where to look for a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Informatics.  When I research online I find only master's degrees in informatics or other universities require you to have an RN degree or IT degree.  I saw someone post here that they were getting their bachelor's degree in Informatics but cannot find that post.  Anyone k ...

Getting Out Of MTing And Going Back To College
Oct 13, 2011

Mting is no longer for me.  I'm 34, single mom, need a better career.  I can't seem to decide on which career path to take.  I want to get my bachelor's degree because it will make me feel like I have accomplished something, and I would like to have a degree and possibly get my master's someday.  I can't decide between healthcare information management and getting my RHIA, or something totally different and getting a BS in business-human resources man ...

The Saddest Part Of MTing
Oct 27, 2012

The saddest part of being an MT is that most of us have to maintain 2 or jobs at the same time, no just to make ends meet, but because of the fact that we don't know when they will be ready to fire us because we missed a comma or did not meet their high, ignorant, unreal expectations. How many of you have to work more than one MTSO, not only to make ends meet but because there is no work or because you fear being let go without notice or explanation?   ...

Since When Did MTing Become VOLUNTEER Work???
Nov 02, 2012

This field is PATHETIC. I once worked for TTD and every single payday, my check was either short or I did not receive it at all. When I questioned the owner about my pay, I was let go...simply asking for the money I made...A--- fired me. Come to find out a short time later that she had ditched every worker in the company...either shorting their pay or not paying them at all and above all, she even owed money to workers in INDIA as well. I thought this was just because TTD was sick company whose ...

I am disabled and on social security disability living with my mother and husband in my mother's house. My husband and I have been here for about 4 years, and it's about time to go. My mother is pressuring us to get out knowing that we can't afford to do so.She's become hateful and aggressive, causing unnecessary stress for not only me but my husband which can potentially effect his work performance. Home Depot, My Ticket Out Of MTing
Apr 21, 2012

Anyone wishing to start a new career, right now may be a good time to apply at Home Depot. They are hiring seasonal cashiers and I applied and I am on my way to being hired after a drug test next week. It's for 120 days with possible permanent employee. I will learn some customer service and cashiering which I feel is valuable since I have never done it with 30 years of being an MT. Hopefully, it will work into something else. It has been tough to find another job but this could just b ...

A Friend Of Mine Asked About MTing Recently ....
Dec 20, 2010

I told her to give it not a second thought, it was a waste of money and time for the schooling required, and, even as an IC, she'd be LUCKY to make $.09 a line and have zero benefits.  I told her she'd be MUCH better off working for McDonald's. Who is going to enter this profession of low pay and no benefits in the future?  Who will stay when, even the transcriptionists who are fortunate enough to be doing straight transcription now, are gone after the switch to VR and ...

Every QA That I Have Talked To Says They Are Sicking Of QAing And Wished They Could Go Back To MTing
