Does having an IC job on the side interfere - with unemployment benefits from employee position?
Posted: Feb 24, 2014
I live in IL and I've looked this up, but can't really find exactly what I'm looking for. I could possibly lose my full-time employee position soon, and work just a few hours as an IC for another company. I was wondering if I should quit my IC job now, or if that would be a red flag when I file for unemployment. Another thing I've read is that if you accept an IC position while on unemployment, that since it is considered "self-employed" that it could possibly interfere with benefits. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :D

First, if you are working as an IC you *ARE* self-employed.
UE - UNEMPLOYMENT compensation. This means you have no income. If you're working, you have an income and legally (and morally IMO) should not be entitled to collect UE.
In Pennsylvania, if you are self-employed, you are considered a principle in a business and not eligible for UE (although these cases can be fought and often won).
OTOH, if your IC income is small, you can report it every week and you are allowed to make up to $XX and then they start subtracting from your allotment.
I'm not sure in what world someone would be looking at losing their job and then quitting a job so they could collect UE.
My income from the IC - job is a set number,,,

of lines and pays $56.00 a week. Nice supplemental to help pay the bills, but in my world I cannot survive on that. Thanks for your other information.
Maybe they could pay you cash, instead? - (Thats what I do)

You can keep the IC job, you just have to report the $56 as self-employed income and it will reduce your UE benefit a little bit. Don't quit the IC job. That's what I did. No problem. I would never ask an IC client to pay me "under the table". They also have to account for that money.

I agree with you. And "under the table" is dangerous. Tax Court is not a pretty place, nor are the penalties they hand out particularly kind. I have seen these folks in action and do not think I would like to tangle with them. Just saying.
Must report ALL income, IC as well as taxable. - sm

You could face HUGE fines for not reporting the IC income

Yes, it will affect it. It is considered employment. You can get by if it is less than what they pay for unemployment perhaps depending on what state you are in, but you are required to list all income as you earn it...not WHEN you receive the payment.. After a few times, it will also start flagging your claim asking about this IC work and a whole list of other questions. It will consider anything long-term in the self-employment arena as having found a job. Also, I worked a side job (employee) per diem during UE. It paid (took out though what I earned) but then caused me problems as above. Also, if you are getting UE, and you do find a job, make sure til the very end that this new job is the PERFECT JOB for you...pay and career-wise. I believe you can do this at least for the state level (well, I don't think there are federal benefits at the moment anyway). I thought I was doing the right thing morally--working what I could find and then getting offered a job two months before hand at almost half my previous pay but more than UE. The job was abusive. After two weeks, it did not work out and I for my own health, had to quit. I was then deemed ineligible for the remainder of my claim--two months worth!!! So be very very very sure your new job is one you will love.

Anyone Here From Ambulatory Side? Jun 25, 2014I was just wondering if anyone posts here that work for the Nuance Ambulatory Care side of things. All I see here are what appears to be posts from the acute care side and they are not very favorable. Going To The Dark Side Jul 17, 2014I now work full time for an MTSO that does Nuance overflow and am relatively happy there. The problem is I need to work part time for several important reasons which I won't go into. Well to do so, I would have to accept a lower line rate (told thems the rules) and have to work fewer hours than I really need to (again told thems the rules). I was thinking I might just do better working directly for Nuance with probably a better line rate and ability to work the number ...

They have the big ear buds that don't really go into the ear and have the volume control along the wire. They aren't all that old either.
