Am I unreasonable or what.....No work and using PTO. - sm

Posted: Feb 24, 2012

Why in the world would a company ask you to use PTO where there is no work available like it is no big deal.  Perhaps some MTs will choose to do this if they cannot afford to do without the pay when work is low.  I understand that, and many do.  When I received an e mail that said, "Workload is low because.........and now would be a good time to use PTO."

Now, you can't very well meet minimum line requirements if the work is not there.  You can't make up those lines if the work is not there.  Why in the world would anyone think I would want to use my vacation time, which I have worked hard to earn, and which I very desperately need for a VACATION.  Is that so when the work is plentiful, you have run out of PTO?

Do you use your PTO because of low work?  I guess I am being unreasonable, but I am actually offended by the suggestion to do so.

I couldnt agree with you more! If there is no work why should you have to give up your vacation. We have lives outside of MT, but apparently they think of us as mere slaves. We should be allowed to choose if we want to use PTO or go unpaid for the no work situation.

I used to get offended, too. What do they think, we have - sm

I worked for a company that required us to use our PTO. - sm

We didn't have the option. I had a part-time job as well, so I didn't need the pay, but I was forced to use the PTO anyway. I quit after 6 months as I was using up PTO as quickly as I accrued it as my account was always out of work on Monday, so had to use PTO every week, if I had any available. I also couldn't afford the medical benefits. So I felt I was making less an an employee without the benefits that are supposed to come with it. I quit and started working as an IC making 2.5 cpl more, so in the end, I can now afford to just save for when I take my vacation.

And I'm fed up with having to use my PTO pay to - make ends meet every month. :(

As soon as I earn that PTO, it's already spent. Usually at the supermarket.

At the company where I work, we are not required to use PTO; it's an option. However, with the extremely low work load for the last six or more months, I had to use up every bit of my PTO (which was about 9 or 10 days built up) every week just to give myself an almost full paycheck. Needless to say, I now have maybe one day left. I get so tired of sitting around waiting for work, not getting paid to give up my day (I am an employee, not an IC). If I were getting paid to sit around going back and forth waiting for work, that'd be fine. So some weeks I don't even equal out minimum wage. It's crazy. And I don't really blame the company... they can't make work magically appear. However, they should either pay us the difference or something...I don't know. It's crazy.

employee status, without work during scheduled time can - collect unemployment. n/m

Yes, and it's an endless cycle! Can't make my lines to get PTO because there's no work. So I end up with no vacation time accrued AND a short paycheck. No end in sight here.

Unreasonable Expectations?
Nov 05, 2012

Am I being unreasonable here? I have been an acute care MT for almost 15 years, spent the last year and half learning coding, coding increasingly complex cases, working towards certification. I am having a hard time with the concept of getting certified and then only being able to find a job doing billing in a doctor's office at $13 an hour. I feel like I would be taking a step backwards, like I have all this inpatient expertise, and I would be billing URIs and primary care visits. The ...

Keystrokes-Is This Reasoanble Or Unreasonable?

I think it is common knowledge that Keystrokes is switching some platforms.    I recently spent several hours trying to help with some formatting issues.    I just learned I willl not be paid for those lines.    Should I expect to be?    I do not want to be unreasonable but I am just wondering.    (No company bashing please.)      ...
