my experience MT to coder - happy
Posted: Jul 14, 2013
I just wanted to share my experience with those who are interested in reading. I discovered this board about 2 years ago. Actually, I used this board very frequently when I was a MT, and then discovered the coding/medical billing link and started to peruse the coversations. I did what I could to find out how to research coding schools, ask the important questions, and I decided to attend Andrews. Absolutely no regrets there. I started my coding training first through AHIMA. I was going to take my classes with them, but I did not like my AHIMA education experience with the prerequisite A&P course. No instructor to ask questions to, no students to chat with. This meant a lot to me - to get answers to my questions. So, I passed the A&P course and enrolled with Andrews. I love having instructors who answer your questions. Yes, it takes a few days and somtimes longer, but I do get answers. I love being able to communicate with other students and know that my struggles are also their struggles. I am not alone, and what I am struggling with is normal. Now a year later, I am at the end of my studies, and I am 4 months into my first coding job, entry level hospital outpatient coder. Real-life coding is very different from learning coding in school (really because of the electronic nature of the Encoder, Epic). Of course the codes are the same for the diagnosis. My starting salary is a little over $12/hour. Gasp! Shock! Yes. But, it was better than working nothing but holidays, nights, and weekends waiting for MT work to dribble in and then find out you lost another account to Nuance, or MQ, or you would be doing editing for 3-4 cpl, and you have 20 years experience. No -thank-you. Never looked back one day. I love my new career. Sometimes I still type a few jobs here and there for some extra $$, and I truly, truly loved being a MT. But you need to give me steady work, and a steady salary.I love getting out of the house, dressing up (casual and even scrubs where I work), and getting paid for 40 hours a week.My point - even if coding does follow some of the same path as MT, make yourself more than a coder. My plan is to get my CCP, CCS, and then branch off into hopefully either auditing or compliance. If I am really wanting to progress, I will enroll in WGU (once I can afford it) and take the Health Informatics course which includes I think 7 IT certs and 100% pass on RHIA (I believe). It's been a while since I've been on their site, so don't hold me word for word please. I started as ancillary coder, very, very simple work. The easiest first job that I could have had. So grateful. But, now I'm branching into the clinic coding, ER coding, and will be cross training soon in inpatient and outpatient surg coding. Your new career from MT will be what you make it. Learn a lesson from the MT world. Do not make yourself so specialized that if something happens in your field, you are screwed. Learn coding and billing, auditing, compliance, one of our coders even came from an insurance company.
Good for you! - Thank you for sharing!

Congratulations! You have done very well.
Your income will increase and job opportunities will present themselves.
Did you say that you got your CPC? If not, my advice is to take it quickly, whether you feel ready for it or not. No one ever feels ready for it. You will probably pass in spite of that. :-) There is no real risk in taking it, either, because if you don't pass, you get a year to retake it for free. Because of the date being so close to the time they switch to ICD-10, you should get this out of the way soon.
Again, congratulations.

Hi! I have 20 years of experience as an MT and want to switch to coding. Do I have enough time to take classes and pass exam before they switch to ICD-10? I really need to get out of the job I'm in. Thanks.
Possibly, yes. - sm

It depends on what course you take. An AAPC course takes 3 or 4 months (they focus on outpatient coding and do not include much A&P, etc.). You might be able to do that. Not sure when their credentialing exams switch.
Others take longer. Colleges, especially, take a long time because you are locked into teir class schedule.
One possibility with Andrews would be to get the outpatient part completed quickly so you can take the CPC exam. You could get a job at that point, too. Then you can finish the rest of it (inpatient).. Several people here have done that.
Switching to ICD-10 on the job will require maybe 15 hours of training for an outpatient coder, so that won't be a problem.
Regardless, this is a good field to go into, so you might as well just jump in!
Thank you for posting this - Student

Hi
I am currently a student at Andrews also. I am only a little over half way through module 1. I had a hard time with the V-codes and I am just curious how coding will work in the real world. As right now we just have a diagnosis and we look it up and it isn't that difficult, but I am sure it isn't like that when you are actually doing the job? Just wondering if you have any insight on that, and also wondering how you got your foot in the door at the hospital you are working at, especially without even being finished with school yet or being certified. I have just casually been looking at the jobs listed and every one I see you have to have a couple years experience or certification? Any help you can add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

MT Experience Helped Get A Job And Increased Starting Pay As Coder May 12, 2015I just wanted to post a word of encouragement to others looking for a coding job. I'm currently working as an MT, studying coding at The Andrews School, passed my CPC exam in December and I just got my first job in coding. Because of my MT experience, my new employer gave me "credit" for my MT experience and gave me a higher starting pay rate. I haven't even finished my studies at Andrews yet. MT To Coder? Aug 28, 2011Hello all. I am currently an MT and for many reasons I am considering leaving that career. I was wondering about coding and billing. How is the pay? As an MT I have seen the pay go down considerably over the years and was wondering if coding/billing is in the same boat. Also, would you recommend becoming a coder in this economy? Which school has the best program? Thanks. ...

Not A Coder Jul 26, 2013I'm not a medical coder. The only ties I have to the medical profession is that I'm a patient. This transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, exactly how is this happening. An MT To A Coder Sep 21, 2014I am posting to (hopefully) give coding students hope, not to get dislikes on my post, but it is what it is. Here's my story: I graduated from coding school about a year ago, after being an MT for over 25 years. I am working as a coder and I am learning every day (reminds me of back in the day as a a new MT). There were so many days when I wanted to give up on coding because, let's face it, it's not easy, but I didn't. I honestly think I will make it as a coder, but I probabl ...
From MT To GT To Coder May 10, 2015Just saying hi, and I really appreciate this board. I've been lurking for a while. I went to Career Step for medical transcription, but soon after graduating, I found the quick turn around time for MT just didn't work for my toddler and homeschooler, so I switched to GT.
Now, 5 years later, it's time to switch things up again, and I've always been interested in the behind the scenes medical paperwork (as nerdy as that sounds!). So feeling kind of lost, I de ...
Advice On Getting First Job From A Coder Jul 12, 2010The following is a post I found on the AAPC web site. I asked the poster first if it was okay to re-post here and he said okay.
Quote begins as follows:
My first coding job was about six years ago. I had called a local college asking about some health billing classes and as I was about to hang up the phone I asked the lady "by the way how do you get your first job in this field?". She said "it's kind of tough, but wait, someone put a card up on the board yesterday...". She got a car ...
Job Availability For New Coder Feb 09, 2011I am planning on enrolling in Andrews School to begin a new career in medical coding and also plan to become certified following that. While looking at job opportunities, I see that most ALL job openings require 2-5 years experience in this profession. On the other hand, I also read where this field of work is in demand of more coders. Obviously, after finishing my course and becoming certified, I don't expect to walk right in and nail down the first job or two that I ...
EMR Vs Medical Coder May 25, 2011I hope this is not a dumb question, but do need some enlightening. I was at my doctor's office this morning and in the midst of the exam we got to talking about my goal to take the medical coding schooling (through Andrews). She was concerned that with the EMR process today, medical coders would not be as involved with actual coding as they have been in the past and therefore the job market not as promising. My doctor's clinic has the computer screen in the office and she sh ...

Finding A Job As A New Coder Sep 30, 2011I am an MT considering going to school for coding. I have been reading the message boards of the coding professional organization and found it to be full of comments from new certified coders who can't find jobs without experience, and some have been looking for over a year. I am leaving the MT field after only 6 years due to salaries going into the tank with SR. Questions For CODER Jun 05, 2012I have read many of your postings and find them all to be extremely intelligent, informative, and logical. Here is my situation. Seven years as MT (mostly acute care accounts with H&P's, discharge summaries, consultations, operations and procedures). I have a BA in biology and a master's in ecology. Was making good income until editing replaced transcribing, plus industry rates keep going down with constant buyouts/mergers. I am 61 years old.

Coder And Coder2 -- Help?! Sep 21, 2013I am grappling with something in my mind. Can you clarify it for me? What would be the difference between a late effect and a past history when you are coding? In my book they say "Leg pain resulting from old fracture" or "Intellectual disability due to previous poliomyelitis". And that's obviously a late effect. But in my mind, I just can't see doctors telling you that so prettily and obviously. How do you know if something is a late effe ...
