Has anyone very successfully finished their coding courses only to..... - Change of heart

Posted: Dec 02, 2013

Feel that it's not really what you want to do?  I finished my coding course at Andrews and truly don't feel that's what I want to do.  I feel disappointment in myself because I invested that much time in school and did very well, but I feel it's not really the job for me.  I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this or anything similiar? Did you just stick with it until you found a job and did your feelings change?   I kept trying to pep myself up by telling myself the kind of money I could potentially make one day would be worth it, but I don't think so.

I finished my course, passed one certification and went on several interviews for coding jobs. It was different for me because I never found a coding job, but do something else related to medical records. I am not going to pursue coding any further and for me that is okay because I was just trying to find something post MT to do for a few more years until I retire. I don't regret the education, though (I didn't attend Andrews). If you are not sure if coding is the job for you, there are other positions where your knowledge will be an asset, although you may not code 8 hours a day.

I went to my community college, got my AAS in Health Information Technology, passed the RHIT exam, was lucky enough to land a coding job at a hospital, and I dislike it very much. Coding just isn't for me. I'm pursuing something completely different now. I'm two classes away from completing my bachelor's degree in business. Through my internship in human resources at a large hospital, I have finally found what I really want to do. I will be working at the hospital when I get my degree, but I will be in human resources. I absolutely love it. It took me a while to figure out what I really wanted to do (going from an MT to a coder and now in human resources). I highly suggest that if you do not enjoy coding, you should go into something else. Life is too short to be unhappy in your career choice.

First of all, don't be disappointed in yourself. - Student

You worked hard to finish that program! It shows how much tenacity you have. Plus you learned a skill not a lot of people know. Be proud of your accomplishment!

I understand where you are coming from. If it was me I'd give it a whirl, just so I knew I tried it and it wasn't going to work out.

I sure didn't mean to get people upset with my question, but I do want to thank all of you for - Change of heart

I really didn't mean for anyone to get upset by my post. I needed to ask someone who went through training who might have had a change of heart either during their schooling or after they were credentialed and working in coding. I just think that if I feel that way about it now, then it might not change.

Don't get me wrong, I think coding is an excellent field for someone who loves the profession. No doubt there is room for advancement and fantastic pay, but in my heart I know it's not for me.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond to my question. I hope each and all a wonderful Christmas and New Year! :)

I got through most of the course, and they kept saying more and more about how stressful the job was, needing to have patience with grumpy doctors, working with the institution's bottom line, etc. I decided, at my age and with my disposition, this just wasn't for me. I don't want or need that kind of stress in my life, if I can help it. The whole process just wasn't a good fit for me. It does seem to be the next logical step sideways for a lot of MTs, just not for me. I do wish you luck in finding something that will fulfill you.

Where I work, the coding is done automatically - in our EMR. One editor checks it.

We have no coders at all.

Wondered when this post would appear - You are later than usual

That is the usual situation for offices, but would be impossible to ill-advised for an inpatient facility of any size.

You could also be describing a chargemaster situation.

It is important to remember . . . this does not mean "no coders." There ARE coding professionals involved, but you are not seeing them. They are the people programming the EHR and setting up the coding in it and the chargemaster. Even if i is not happening at your facility, that's who does this.

Too many of you see coding as the one job of sitting at a desk applying codes to encounters. When that job starts getting done with electronic assistance, you think "Told you so! No more coders!" That is not the only job. You just aren't in a position to see the rest.

That is why getting advice about a career from people who know little about it isn't such a good idea. I can't imagine why those people think they are qualified to offer it.

Sounds like the - Chargemaster codes nm

It made the most sense to me coming from MT as it just seemed like a natural transition. It is really hard to get a grip on what coding actually is and what it is like until you are doing it. I appreciate where you are at, that's for sure. I like it now more because I have learned more and feel more confident. Some days are frustrating but some days are good. I don't ever think I will say, I LOVE THIS. But I canĂ¢€™t imagine doing anything else other than MT and that is out. I like to be left alone to work. It is a solitary job - me and the charts. I donĂ¢€™t have to answer the phone; donĂ¢€™t have to deal with the public, and this is the most I've made so that helps. Good luck to you! You will find your place.

Online Coding Courses
Aug 07, 2012

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here knew of or attended any good acredited online billing and coding schools. Right now we only have one vehicle so I need something that is online and offers financial aid.  My local college does offer it but not online and the classes are at times that I'm working so an online school is what I need. Thanks ...

Just A Note About Coding Courses
Sep 03, 2013

Coding courses do not all teach the same thing.  You need to be very aware of that when deciding on one.  A course that looks like a fantastic bargain will contain less. Some teach only outpatient "office" coding.  That does not require as much medical background or as much coding instruction.   They are shorter and less costly.  The AAPC  courses are outpatient only.  25% of these coders are unable to find jobs, especially without experience. Others teach bo ...

Getting Unsoliticed Spam From Coding For MTs Courses
Sep 13, 2012

Watch where you leave your name, phone number, and/or e-mail unless you don't mind getting spam e-mail (mostly) and unwelcome phone calls. I don't think you can get them to stop unless you want to get a reply with more pressure to enroll. In the future I will be very careful about putting my e-mail or phone number on anything. All I wanted was to be able to view the information online, no e-mail, no phone calls, no invasion of my privacy. What is this world coming to! Nobody respects t ...

Can You Take The RHIT Or CCS Having Just Finished Coding School?
Apr 01, 2010

I am thinking about taking a billing/coding class, but noticed that getting a job after that involved having the RHIT or CCS.  I am wonding if this will be a catch 22 and don't want to spend time in school for coding if I cannot pass these 2 tests when I am done, as it looks like I will not be able to get hired without these certificates.  Sorry about the confusion on this.  Thanks for your time and info. ...

Any Students In Coding Courses Found Mistakes?
May 21, 2012

I am almost done with a course that was put together by the credentialing organization.  Now that I am almost done, I have gathered my notes on the course inconsistencies and incorrect answers to submit my comments to them so this doesn't happen to the next student.  I would like to hear the coders' and students' thoughts on this. Doesn't someone take the entire course and fix/correct BEFORE it is offered as a course?  ...

When People Take The 'Shortcut' To Coding Courses, How Do They Reason It?
Sep 15, 2012

I would like to hear from some coding students who took shortcut coding classes about why they chose to do that? It seems purposeless if your goal is to get a job. It also seems entirely worthless if the goal is to become a professonal coder, because they won't be eligible for the credentials test that counts, the CCS.  Did I miss something? ...

ANYONE GO OUT ON DISABILITY SUCCESSFULLY AFTER 20+ AS AN MT?
Apr 19, 2011

I've been doing this since having an IBM Selectric was the fastest typewriter out there.  I'm under 50, but in the past 6+ years, my neck and back have started killing me.  I went out, spent $800 on a Herman Miller Aeron chair - what a waste of money.  I've been getting epidural steroid injections and had rhizotomies in upper and lower.  MRI shows bone spurs and degeneration.  I applied for SS Disability on my own, and was denied.  I spoke with a lawy ...

Anyone Successfully Using DQS On Windows 7 64-bit?
Jan 22, 2012

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 64-bit and would love to use it to work on, but tried yesterday and it wouldn't not work.  It kept saying it needed NET Framework version 2.0 (SP2) downloaded from Microsoft site, which I did, and it still didn't work.  Why can't they come out with DQS 7 yet?  It's already a month past due.  It'd be nice if they could finally get something right! ...

Has Anybody Successfully Transferred To Another POD?
Jan 09, 2015

I'm getting pretty sick of the condescending questions asked ("why didn't you do this" or "why did you do that") by my PC, who I was moved to during the POD initiation and would much rather go back to my old PC, who was awesome, even if I have to leave the accounts I have been typing on for years.  This PC just makes me feel like an idiot. ...

I work for one of the MTSOs and they provided a desktop PC.  However, there are times when I would like to be mobile and would like to be able to use my laptop.  The company will load their software on their PCs and will not load it on an employees personal computer.  So I am trying to devise a way to be able to use my laptop on those occasions when I would like to take my work with me. RMT Prep Courses
Feb 22, 2010

I have a question regarding the different prep courses offered for the RMT exam. There is one offered through OAK Horizons and one offered through Career Steps. I am wondering if anyone has used them and found them to be helpful at all or a complete waist of money. I really want to earn my RMT status, but I graduated from my mt course a little over a year ago and think that I could really use a refresher course. Any thoughts about these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! ...

Just Completed My MT Courses. Now What???
Apr 27, 2010

I just completed my Medical Transcription course through Penn Foster. When I first decided I wanted to become an MT it was the being able to work from home and being home with my young son that was my deciding factor. Now after completing the course and getting an idea of what all is involved, I'm a little insecure about it all. I did ok in my courses, but being just "ok" isn't gonna cut it in the real world where the reports are not just for testing purposes, but for REAL people. I do ...

RHIT Courses/certification
Jul 06, 2011

Hi, I was wondering if anyone in the Chicago area would care to comment on the RHIT associates degree course at College of DuPage?  Does it prepare  you well for the RHIT certification exam?  Is it a good preparation for the RHIA program you later pursued (I am thinking of University of Illinois-Chicago)?  I am an 18-year transcription veteran hoping to become a coder and then possibly a Direction of HIM eventually.  ANY help would be much appreciated!  Thanks in Ad ...

How Many Hours A Week For Courses?
Dec 20, 2011

Hi.  I'm wondering for those of you who either attend/attended M-Tec or Andrews, about how many hours per week do you spend on the classes (total, including all studying)?  M-Tec's website says 25-30 hours.  Do you find this to be accurate?  I did not see an answer on the Andrews website.  I want to be sure before I commit that I have the necessary time to spend on the course.  While I'm willing to put 30 hours in, I do not want to find out that in re ...

Online MT Courses For Certification....
Jun 14, 2012

Does anyone know if there are any online MT courses for certification that have financial aid?  Most of the ones I have come across so far have no financial aid, want payment up front, or want at least 200/month payment, which I cant do.  I was a MT for about 10 years, got out of it for a couple of years, and cannot seem to get a job now that I would like to return to it, so thought getting certified would help.  With our financial state though, I cannot afford a big payment of an ...

Just Finished The 6.1 Training, What-the?
Sep 07, 2010

Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't help think that the training person on those videos is trying to sell used cars.  The tone of her voice sounds so fake - and some of those incredible words she used, like "streamlining" or describing this exceptionally wonderful program (not her words, but something like it).  It was my impression that she got the job to train us 3000 MTs because of her salesman-like attitude, not teaching expertise.  She fumbled around, not very profes ...
