CCS exam- where do I find dates? - another coding student

I have made some good progress in my course and am wondering, if I push myself very, very hard, if I can finish my course and sit for the CCS this winter. I've downloaded the CCS candidate guide and looked everywhere, but cannot find a date (or two) in order to have a firm goal.

I am not an AHIMA member (yet) and haven't had luck on the Pearson site either.

Any ideas on another place to look? I'd rather hear from actual coders who possess a CCS or a fellow coding student. It's nothing personal. Thanks.

But it's not rocket science. Contact your school for information on how to schedule or call AHIMA, they have a toll free number and will determine your eligibility. I did a web search and it looks as if exams are scheduled on line through a company called Pearson. Google AHIMA CCS exam schedule info or things like that, it should tell you what you need to know. A person does not need to be a coder or even a student to do research on the internet.

You can register at the AHIMA web site. Click the tab at the top marked "Certification", then click on the "register for exam" tab on the right. The fee is $100 less if you are an AHIMA member, good luck. I'm off to my lowly MT job now.

I am already registered on the AHIMA site. This doesn't give you access to the dates of the exam. I read through the boards and the AHIMA site before I asked my question.

The AHIMA exams and all the requirements are very confusing. I keep tabs on them for people at work, and I have several, so I'm kind of up to speed on them, but every so often even I get confused!

Wait for approval letter with a registration # on it. Once you get the approval letter, then you can go in and register and it will give places and times, and you then can see times. I remember it being a pain in the arse to find the times and places, because you go through all the registration before you can see them. That was in 2009. If you go to pearsonvue.com/ahima you can check locations of test centers.

You choose your own date - CCS, CPC

There are no "dates" for AHIMA exams. Once you register and pay your fee, you will get an authorization from AHIMA which will allow you to schedule a date with the testing company. The farther out you schedule, the more appointments will be available.

If you miss your appointment, or if you arrive with the wrong books or anything like that, you forfeit your testing fee, so take care.

Be aware that the requirements for the test will change on January 1, 2013. If your course does not provide A&P, pathophysiology, pharmacology, med terms, reimbursement methods, and both intermediate and advanced ICD-9-CM and CPT coding, you will not be able to test until you have accrued enough work experience to qualify.

Note that it is NOT necessary to be an AHIMA member to take their tests or get the credentials.

AAPC, on the other hand, has scheduled testing dates with your local chapter. They also require you to be a member to test and to keep the credential.

I'm kind of confused about this. Does a comma go after the date all the time? For example: LFTs from 10/23/2012, are within normal limits, or lab tests from 12/14/2011, are normal. I always put commas after the year when I worked at home. Now I work outside the home and I'm confused about it. Everything here is in a different format and I'm just not sure. I found a post on here from August about it but still not sure what to do. TIA ...

More and more frequently, I am getting dictators who say, "the patient underwent the procedure IN 04/11/12" or "the patient underwent the procedure ON April 2012." It's just a little thing that's kind of annoying because you have to change the IN to ON and vice versa, but it's happening so often, I'm wondering if that's now an acceptable way to say it and I'm just not in the know. I am doing a lot of cancer clinic notes today (very long reports). They all have lots of dates in them due to the various tests and treatments the patients have had. This particular facility wants the dates typed out in XX/XX/XXXX fashion; however ASR types them out the long way, i.e., August 26, 2010, so I have to change them all to fit the client profile. In my company we use ordinals in dates, example May 4th 2011. Would there be a comma after the 4th in the date like there is if it was May 4, 2011? I know that oridinals in dates is not encourage, but the client specs require us to put the dates as they dictate them. I cannot believe how long I have been waiting to get started with Nuance. Unbellievable!!!! I did testing way back in middle of March. Then had interview about March 24. I have a few SH entries to insert dates - for example, ydl inserts yesterday's date using the long format (July 9, 2013). I have one little problem though and can't seem to figure it out. When I use the "%e" parameter, I get "July 9, 2013" with the extra space between the month and the day. Once the days roll over to double digits this is not a problem.
