Well, I be darn!! - MTstubby

Posted: Jan 21, 2011

Since starting my job 8 months ago, I have been without work and on an impossible account to make any kind of living wage.  I specifically was told when I was hired that I would be put on a cardiology account and I agreed, since I was coming off a cardiology account at my previous job.   Well, fast forward, I was put on another account and an account that is verbatim, heavy ESLs and American speaking doctors who cannot speak.  Believe it or not, the account specifics are 65 pages long and counting, and follows all the correct verbage rules, et cetera.  Also, on this account if you send more than 5% of your work to QA in a given pay period, you will be written up.  I told my supervisor I did not sign on for this, but this fell on death ears.  I thought if I just stick it out until I get my 90 days in, I could switch accounts.  Well, after my 90th day,  other accounts were available and I followed the proper protocol and sent unanswered emails to my supervisor to switch to the open accounts.  I am an acute care MT and clinic,so any job available woud suit me.  I never received a response from supervisor, so I contacted the recruiter, who promptly told me I would have to take an acute care test in order to be eligible for any new accounts. I told the recruiter, I tested in with an acute care test  and I am an acute care MT.

When that did not deter me, the recruiter told me I had to get approval from my supervisor to be eligible for any new accounts.  I contacted my supervisor and she never answered.  So, just for the heck of it, I resent my resume into the recruiter and left off my hyphenated maiden name and only used my last name without my maiden name, and guess what the recruiter called me and said, I did not have to test due to my experience and resume, and asked how soon I wanted to start.  I told the recruiter I was already an employee and wanted to switch accounts and reminded her of who I was.  After this, she said she would contact me back, but I immediately got an email from my supervisor stating all employees must have achieved a consistent QA score of over 98% in order to be eligible for any new accounts.  I sent my supervisor back my past three monthly QA reports of 99%, and I am waiting to hear back from her.

What is the problem?  why do they hold employees back when there in not enough work on the account you were put on,yet they advertise for more MTs.

Still waiting?

They have hired way too many and I've sat here for six hours so far today and have less then 100 lines but they're still hiring. They do it because they're trying to find people who will do the same amount of work we do but for less pay.

If you did not sign on for this, you should have left. How is it MTSO - fault you LET yourself be misused? nm

1. Do you know how much a monthly COBRA payment is for a family? Some exceed $1100 a month. This is for 90 days!! Who can afford to do this EVERY time an MTSO pulls a stunt like this.

2. Add in the factor that lately the MTSOs require even very experienced MTs jump through the arduous, time-intensive testing hoops...sometimes only to be told they don't qualify (especially if at a certain age or experience level).

3. People can't just up and leave a job whenever they're unhappy with the stunts MTSOs have pulled. How many times have we heard on this board from those who ARE happy with their MTSO, "It may take a lot of time, but you just have to search for them. They're out there." Since it may take a lot of time, doesn't that rather imply that they're few and far between and most MTSOs play the game like the one this poster experiences? So what good is it to jump from one to another until one "finds" the good employer? Any employer can claim to be the good one. The truth only comes out once employed.

You sound like a person who would blame the abused for being beat up or someone mugged for walking the street at night...like it's all their fault that this has happened.

How can you be satified if YOU dont find the good fit for you? - Waiting to do something will SM

only prolong your agony. You have to start sometime if you are going to rectify your bad situation, doing nothing will get you nothing but more hopelessness. No I wouldnt blame a mugging victim walking the street at night--unless they refused to learn from that bad experience and kept doing it and kept getting mugged. Surely, after the 2nd-3rd time, sympathy is not required.
I agree, but you don't know this poster's circumstances - Not the OP

How do you know she isn't looking elsewhere? How do you know that she was just relating what happened to her on this particular occasion with HR at her own company?

It sounds to me by her waiting it out for the 90 days, she was giving the employer the benefit of the doubt. From that time on she could have been looking elsewhere too. You just don't know what she's doing to rectify the situation, but you're blaming the MT without knowing the circumstances.

Yes, I completely agree, but there is always one person - who says the fault lies with the MT - nm

supervisor when there's time to talk. Introduce yourself to her. Woo her. Make a joke out of the application. Don't be an enemy. Recast yourself from "problem" to "solution."

I've been "shunted" out of the work flow by a supervisor who didn't know me, so I know it happens. Fixing this is going to b e up to you, though. You're the one who cares about what's happening. You need to find a way to make her realize she does too. This may not always be possible, but most of the time a supervisor will have various needs an employee could fill if only she realized it. You just need one chance. Might as well try for it with job in hand rather than with job applications to new companies. Good luck.

Not sure I understand......... - sm

Are you just asking to ADD an account or be completely dropped off of your account due to the difficulty level? If it is the latter, I would STRONGLY suggest that you just listen the best you can and learn to understand the impossible ESL dictators, because why should they decide someone else must do it, because it is hard for you to make your line count on it?

because she also said there is no work - not hard to understand

If you don't have work you can't make your line count. The frustration is that they have employees who are running out of work, and yet they are hiring for another account. Why can't MTSOs look at their MTs who aren't being kept busy and split them between 2 accounts? That is common sense. Not that hard to understand.
