So excited... - happyhappyjoyjoy

Posted: Feb 22, 2014

I have taken a position with Imedx/GIS and could not be happier to get back into transcription. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. I did CNA work for a while, long hours, terrible wear and tear on your body and low pay. I had done CNA work prior to transcription. I also currently work at a school as an aide. Low pay, part time, don't get paid for snow days, etc. At least with transcription, I'm at home, I can be flexible with my hours, don't have to worry about gas or snow days, or wear and tear on my body (except my wrists/hands, but that's what breaks are for). lol Anyway, I'm working on getting my shortcuts into Word. If anybody has any advice for that or GIS, I'm all ears. I'm just happy to be back! :) TIA!

How long have you been out of transcription? And have you been keeping up with how horrible it is these days?

I am curious if you're a recruiter or something. Funny how you popped up right after many are trying to decide to leave MT and become a CNA.

not a recruiter - happyhappyjoyjoy

I started as a CNA in 1992, took on MT shortly after my youngest daughter passed away so I could be home with my oldest daughter. Between CNA and MT, I have 17+ years of experience. I was actually in the first year of an RN program while working as a CNA when I decided to drop it all and find something else to do, so I took a part time job in education. I have only been out of MT since 2012. It is horrible everywhere right now. When I worked as a CNA, I always worked short and 12-hour shifts to boot. Sometimes you had good nurses to help you out, sometimes not. The pay is not great, even with all my years of experience, I was offered less than $9.00 an hour at a few places. No joke. Back when I worked as an MT, I visited this board as well and same thing then, everybody leaving to go for something else, CNA included. I wished them all well. Who knows, some of them may love it and find they were meant to do it. I cannot physically do it anymore, got tired of the constant complaining the minute I got to work because that's what the staff did, all the regulations going into place on top of what regulations were already there, I had enough. That explain it good enough for ya?

Depending on where you work, when census is low you are sent home. If you are PRN, that means no pain. If you are employee, that means using up personal/vacation time. I lost so many days last year due to low census, it was unbelievable.

Get ready for some cherry-picking by your supervisors. - They also are

[ In Reply To ..]
transcriptionists and take all the sweet jobs for themselves leaving behind junk for the lowly MTs. Also, nobody seems to know who does what and there is no communication to speak of when you need help. Everyone kind of disappears, except for people who can't help you anyway. Joke of a company. And as for making over $9/hr - GOOD LUCK!

I have had amazing communication from everybody so far. No joke. Right now, I make minimum wage and I drive over 20 minutes a day for it and work less than 6 hours. Regardless of what I make, it will be better than what I make now and I am quite happy with that. :)

That's how it always starts off. Sorry but that's the way it goes. - After you get comfortable

If you research and look, they are around. If you are so miserable in this field that you have to be so negative toward someone who is happy, maybe you should find something else to do. I have been around this field for a long time. This is what I want to do. Too bad you don't get paid for trying to bring someone down. You'd be rich. Have a nice day! I hope somewhere down the road you find something that makes you happy and a nicer person. :)

Wow! I didn't know that your way was EVERYBODY'S way and what doesn't work for YOU won't work for anyone else. I'm happy with my decision because I am doing what works for ME! I love how as soon as somebody posts something positive for themselves, someone always has to come out to be pessimistic about it. I'm sorry, but all the negative nellies in the world do not know what is best for me. Thank you for entertaining me today, though. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. ;)

If you have read this board for any length of time, you would know this kind of thread would degenerate into insults and name calling, they always do. If you are happy with your decision, great. Why do you want to come here and be dumped on by the negative nellies? That's what I never understand about why happy people come here and proclaim for all the world how happy they are. It seems to happen every weekend too! Funny that.

If you read my original post, I was asking for advice on shortcuts for word and GIS, not just coming here to say how happy I am. Since I haven't done transcription in a couple of years, it's kind of hard to remember all the shortcuts I used to have. I was posting for anything helpful. It's a shame people on this board can't grow up (that is NOT directed toward you). Thing is, today is my day off and that is why I am posting here. I have about 4 jobs, mostly involving week days. I only have time on the weekends to actually sit down on the computer and get anything else done.
Why not just post on the main board - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
And ask for help with shortcuts or the best kind of expander. You posted on the company board and specified GIS, and then your moniker, happy happy joy joy. You had to have known when you said GIS, current or former employees would share their experiences. Sorry if that is not what you intended, but that's life on this board.
Also, have you done your research on imedx? - Check out who the

Good for you! We all know that MT is not stable, but neither is anything else, so we do what works best for us! I have had to change companies a few times in order to stay afloat in MT, but I am hanging in there and will ride the wave as long as I can.

Anyway, congratulations to you!

Thank you! - happyhappyjoyjoy

Very true! Nothing is stable and I am doing what works best for ME! Doesn't mean I don't have something else on the side either, though, but right now, this is my fit. Good luck to you and thank you! :)

If you are on the Oncology side you will have your own doctors, so no cherry picking.

As for your shortcuts, I would suggest typing your reports in Word, then copy them into Scribe. I spent a weekend putting in every shortcut I could think of, then entering new ones as I went along. Remove Dr., Mr., Mrs., etc from the exceptions list so that the last name automatically capitalizes when you type those abbreviations.

Which version of Word are you using? When I had 2003 it was only a couple of keystrokes to get to the Autocorrect screen. I just got 2010 and it's a hassle with I think 5 keystrokes to get to it. But I found out how to make changes in Word so that I can get to Autocorrect in one keystroke. I did the same thing for formatting numbered lists. Email me if you're interested and I'll send you instructions.

I don't know if things will change now that IMedX has bought out GIS. They always tell you nothing will change, but then things change anyway. I sure hope not because I really love my job. Good money, great supervisors, love having assigned doctors and M-F.

Good luck to you! I hope it works out for you like it did for me!

If you pick low-level jobs as an escape - you will be disappointed

[ In Reply To ..]
CNA and "school aide" are thankless, low-pay/intense-labor jobs. It is unsurprising that you found them disappointing.

My advice to anyone looking to get out of MT is to go for something more rewarding. Stop glorifying jobs that require little or no education and are mostly manual labor.

Focus higher up the food chain, even if it means getting some training and education.

I know I would rather stay home and do MT than CNA. sm - Anna Toomy

[ In Reply To ..]
Before I did MT, I worked as a unit secretary on a hospital ward, and I had several CNA friends, who had to work under grouchy and bossy RNs. CNA had to do the dirty work like clean up crap and yucky stuff. So, I would rather stay home rather than commute to and from a hospital and have to do yucky stuff any time although MT is yucky also, but at least I don't have to clean up vomit or collect stool specimens.

Oh yeah, congrats happyhappyjoyjoy. nm - Anna Toomy

Well duh, who wouldn't??? - cindyoh

[ In Reply To ..]
You don't go from cushy transcription at home to CNA willingly, for God's sake, but I'm ready if I have to so I can keep on paying the mortgage. I'll transcribe as long as I can from home at my present company till my hours and pay dwindle down to next to nothing, then it probably will be to a CNA job at a place up around the corner from where I live at my age. When you're young you can afford to be choosier, you have the ambition and the time.

heck yeah me too!! not enough money in the world for me to be - a nurse let alone CNA

[ In Reply To ..]
never understood why nurses thought they were such a big deal. Nothing but a bunch of glorified butt wipers with limited educations.

in their eyes they are. My sister in law is an RN and you would think the - doctors bow down to her the way

she talks but I know all she does is sit around complaining about how much her feet hurt and take patients meds. Let's not forget the butt wiping.
sorry, I misunderstood. - mtbooboo

I'm sorry,I thought you were talking about CNA's as glorified butt wipers..I worked as a CNA for years ... no glory there! LOL! Yes, you are correct.. most of the nurses passed meds and sat at the nurses station doing..whatever..They thought we were so far below them.
RNs dont wipe butt - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
CNAs do, but only on rare, occasional circumstances do RNs have to. Patient care techs and CNAs do, but not RNs. And being a nurse is a very rewarding job; you gotta have the right heart, compassionate and not be easily grossed out to do it. I did it for almost 7 yrs.

You guys must not know what's required to - become a nurse SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Look up the requirements and curriculum to become a nurse, NOT a CNA, an RN. RNs have to pass state boards and are required to do continuing education. The program itself is 2 years long, but that does not include the 2 yrs worth of prerequisites required before you can even test to get into the program - Yes, you must test and pass with a certain
percentage to even be considered for the program, you also have to have a good GPA. So I would hardly call that limited education.
The point is better to be MT than working under an RN wiping - butts. nm/Anna Toomey
[ In Reply To ..]

it IS a limited education. Just like MT. you are specialized - not enough money in the world

if my sister in law can be an RN with her rotten teeth hillbilly self anyone can. No respect for nurses, sorry.
