Job hopping - bookworm

Posted: Jul 16, 2010

At what point is too many jobs a bad thing? I quit my 3-year long hospital job about 5 months ago because I wanted to work at home. I knew that I would get a pay cut, but my hours have nearly doubled and my pay has dropped by 30%. I have been working at one national company full time for about 3 months now, I had a part time job with a national that I quit after 2 weeks, and now have a part time IC job that I enjoy.

My full time job is okay, but I am having a hard time making my lines and getting a decent paycheck, plus the benifits are horrible. I like my IC job and plan on continuing on that one. Yesterday a job came up for an outpatient place here in my town that offers stellar benifits, and apparently the pay will be at or near what I was making at my hospital (17/hr). I applied yesterday - I got called today and have an interview on Monday.

My only problem is that if this new job doesn't work out (assuming I will be hired) and I quit my full time national job, will this look really bad on future applications. I want to be a loyal employee, but loyalty is hard when I am working 60 hours a week just to keep status quo and still have no benifits. I am really looking forward to this interview, and this place has a great reputation and very little turn around, and I love the work they do, so I know I can be good at it, not to mention it will be hourly and still be at home (I thought they only had in-house people or I would have applied a long time ago. )

I just worry being the last one hired if they have to start cutting back like my old hospital did that I will be the first one cut or if they go to VR I will again be the first one cut.

How many companies did you go through before you found a keeper?

I have been doing this for 8 years - at home

and still haven't found a keeper. If I could find a job like what you are contemplating I would jump all over it. A little bit of advice about working for a national company, there is no loyalty in this business so don't sweat it. Trust me it is a lot easier to fire someone when they have never even seen your face and they will do it in a blink of an eye.

Take this job and run with it as long as it lasts. If you want to and can, keep the IC part-time job that you enjoy and do both. Don't ever feel like you owe something to these national MTSOs because they are going down the tubes fast!

Take the in-house job - sm

If you're keeping the little part-time IC job, then there would not even be a need to mention the national MTSO that you'd be quitting if you were to be in the position of re-hunting for a job. Your resume will show continuity of employment.

ALOT! If I were you I would go with the inhouse job.

Many services realize you don't stay with one service for any variety of reasons. Oftentimes they look at collective experience.

Think positive that you will get (and love) the inhouse job and your life will get back some semblance of normal again!! Good luck!!

Too many jobs? - oldmt

In today's economy that is a hard question to answer. With the way the MT job market is going/has gone, there are many of us that are finding it hard to make ends meet. It certainly isn't like the old days. That being said, you need to look maybe at your attitude, and this isn't meant as a slam, but what popped out at me on your post was two things:
1. "On my current job I am having trouble making my lines and a decent pay check." The paycheck I can understand given the low pay most places pay per line but having trouble making your lines???? That is a problem a new job isn't going to fix.
2. Was your statement "what if the new job doesn't work out". That is a glass half empty attitude and almost always ends up not working out.

What you need to do to answer your question is answer the questions that you would be asked on an interview. What would your former employer tell us about you if we contacted them? (ie: "She couldn't make her lines and quit.) and 2. What are you going to bring to/offer our company? Frequent job hopping makes an employer question if the reason is "you" and not the circumstances.

I am not saying it is you, I am just saying these are the things that answer your question. JMHO

I understand where you are coming from - bookworm

With the second point, that is what I am worried about, that if I go through 4 jobs in 5 months, if that will get my resume in the trash before an interview.

As for the first part, my line counts are partly because of the platform I'm using, and partly because of the account hopping, and partly because the work I do there is no weekend or holiday work available, so if I have a holiday, or if my computer crashes, or if THEIR computers crash (which has happened twice), I have no extra time to make up the work except for putting in really long hours during the week. That's been my trouble so far.

In my past jobs, and in my part time job, I haven't had trouble meeting or exceeding line count requirements, so I'm led to believe that it's not 'just me' - although I am not nearly as fast as some MTs on here say they are - but I think I'm about average.

I'm really not trying to be glass half empty, but I know the job market right now, the increasing use of VR, the front end EMR programs, these are serious things to consider.
If you get a good VR platform - curious

If you are on a good VR platform then it really isn't hard to make double your lines, honestly. I have worked on good and bad VR platforms and it makes all the difference in the world.

I know a lot of people aren't fans of VR, but I found on a good platform that I could do double my lines that I could type and my hands didn't kill me. On the flip side of that I have worked on VR platforms that slowed me down to less than what I can type.

Good luck.
Go for INHOUSE! - shortstak6733

These jobs on this board will be here until the end of time. In-house is hard to find. these companies are not loyal. Half the managers wont even be there 6 months later. Take care of yourself first. The rest will come.

MY VOTE FOR INHOUSE - MT

If only for the stability factor, I would go for the inhouse job.

Also, I'm not so sure that it is mandatory that you include details of every single position that you have ever had on your resume, especially with regards to exact start and stop dates when it was less than six months or so.

In this economy "job-hopping" may well be necessary. I quite honestly do not think anyone will think the less of you for it. Look out for your own best interests. Good luck to you!

The longest time spent at company was 4 years, sm - 19 years doing transcription

and then 3 years. I have been searching for the "keeper" for 19 years and have still yet to find it. The company I was with for over 4 years changed to a platform that I didn't like and the one for 3 years simply did not have enough work for me to make the money I needed to make. The rest in between were jobs that I made a mistake taking.

Account Hopping
Mar 27, 2015

has already started this morning.  Not for me though.  I have decided that it is not in the best interest of #1 the patients mainly, #2 the clients, and very last and least of importance, #3 MM to expect contract demands to be met with this company's current guidelines in place AND be able to do a professional job on a legal document when it is highly likely that mistakes WILL be made when accounts are submitted to MTs in such a sporadic manner and expect perfection ALL the time.& ...
