They should have done that from the beginning and then we wouldn't have had the influx of how-low-can-you-go, I can type that line for xx cents mentality, coupled with if we're going to get crap we might as well pay less for it.
It's a profession. Had it been treated that way, the story may have been different.
Even with a degree, the lower pay goes, the more - corners I cut just to squeak by. -sm

Too bad MTSOs are so greedy and stupid. It reminds me of a sign I once saw in a high-end auto repair shop that specialized in drive trains and rear ends in performance cars:
"RUSH JOBS:
You want it bad? You get it bad.
You want it worse? You get it worse.
So - how bad do you want it?"
I think of that every time my MTSO gyps me out of one line here, another line there, and continually lowers my pay.
"3.5 cents per line? So - how bad do you want it?"
Bare-bones punctuation? Check.
Little to no proofing? (After all - time equals money! - Check.
If blank can't be figured out after ONE backup and re-listen, it STAYS blank? - Check.
Every day they send us emails about picky-picky little grammatical or punctuation nuances that, let's face it, don't change the meaning or correctness of the report at all. If they really think we're going to take a further financial hit by stopping and extensively researching absolutely every comma and semicolon in every report, then they're even dumber than I thought.
They want perfection, then cough up a living wage, skinflint MTSOs!

We all get to CHOOSE for whom we work. I choose not to work for 3.5 cpl of any kind. I've done MT for 30+ years and have NEVER made less than $25/hr. Right now, I average $25-30.
It's all about choices and being a smart business person, IMO.
I originally chose not to work for 3.5 cpl. When my - see msg.

MTSO started cutting our pay (first an across-the-board pay cut for all, then, cutting more and more for VR, then for different accounts), I started looking. 3 years later, I'm still looking, but am not going to quit the job I have until I've got another job offer in-hand. Meanwhile, they stopped paying for paragraph headers, cut the VR pay even further, and now it's down to 3.5 cpl. They used to pay based on what level you were, and I was at the top level. You got that pay no matter which account you were working on that day. Now they chintz us out by paying higher for some accounts, lower for others. By some strange "coincidence", now all I get in my job inbox is mostly the lower ones. So in essence, in just 4 years, I've gone from 9 cpl to 3.5 cpl. So yessireee, I'm most definitely on the hunt for a different job.
No argument there. - Huh

You are certainly right in that assessment.
I just find it interesting that --- with all the seasoned, professional MTs around -- this one company (or at least the only one that I have encountered) would have such a requirement. Taking myself as an example, I was an Honors English student, a Journalism major, took Latin in college and made A's in it, am a top producer, 99% documented accuracy rate, had my own business as well as have worn several administrative hats, etc. I do not possess a degree because I didn't finish college. I know folks with degrees who can't even compose a proper sentence! So the degree shouldn't be the end-all and the be-all, and frankly to have it as a criterion in a field that largely doesn't require it is "interesting."
I'll bet most with MD degrees bypassed English entirely. - It certainly shows in their dictation, doesnt it?

Every time I hear, "the left buttockS" or "the diaphragmS" I just CRINGE!
Throw some Latin endings into the mix, and you really have problems! "EpididI" is an all-time favorite! Or using "residuaL" as if it were a noun.
LOL. That's a good one. - suzyQ

I've always wondered why none of them ever got a course on do's and dont's of dictation before they ever get the privlege of ever using a dictating machine.
If I went through all the work, time and expense to have a Bachelor's Degree, I'd be pretty ticked off if that's all I could get with it.
Still, that janitor's job paid a lot better than MT - something like $18-20/hour. That's why I looked. ...
"Strictly verbatim" makes me sick, especially when we now have - what? - maybe 60 to 70% ESL dictators on many accounts. I can't begin to tell you how rotten some of my dictators are, but you can only change it if it's so bad that it's incomprehensible. Otherwise, leave the stench alone.
It's actually wearing me down mentally and emotionally.

After hearing all the hum drum about the future of new medical transcriptionists on this website, I'm starting to feel like a real numskull for even choosing my 2 year degree in medical transcription. It just seems like there's no hope for new medical transcriptionists these days.
Should I just get any regular job and just go for my bachelors degree in something completely different? Since I've been posting on hear for the last week and so far the answers to my questions have bee ...
Can anyone tell me, and I mean if you are on the forum right now if 1st degree block AV block is now acceptable or even preferred over first degree AV block? Don't get me wrong guys, no matter when you answer it, it will help me. I would just have like an answer if possible tonight, but I realiize that is asking too much. Just answer whenever you get some time. I would appreciate it. Thanks guys!!
Hope! ...
I've been all over the Internet and my texts and past assignments and I cannot find a definitive answer to this. I'm trying to decide whether it should be "third degree compression fracture" or "3rd degree compression fracture" as everything I've seen online says to spell it out as it pertains to burns. I'm assuming it would be the same for fractures, but I can't find anything that describes a compression fracture as a degree. Does anyone know this one ...
I'm going back to school. I know that I want a bachelor's degree. The trouble is, I don't know what I want to study. My personality is introverted and shy. I can deal with co-workers, but dealing with the general public and customers is not my strong point. So careers where I'd have to be out front or a "leader" wouldn't be a good option for me.
I can't/don't want to be a nurse or teacher. I had thought about getting a degree in Computer Science, but I am not g ...
Hi all. I plan on taking the RMT test soon and feel confident of passing. My question is, if I do get the title, will employers care that I don't have a formal education in MT?... Would passing the test serve as adequate indication that I know enough to qualify?
Thanks in advance. ...
I see many job ads for coders that specify a college degree is required. I am in coding school currently but only have a GED. What do you think chances are I can get a job with no college degree? I currently work as a remote MT and have almost 20 years of continuous experience in that field and was hoping that would help me get a job. I am not at all, however, interested in getting a college degree. ...
My husband is close to finishing the MT program at Kaplan University. He will end up is AS Degree - is this a good program? Does he have any chance of getting a job? This degree cost 10 times as much at the course from CareerStep. I sure hope we didn't waste ALOT of money for nothing. ...
So about 6 months ago I started the MT program at Kaplan University and have been really enjoying it so far. I was reading in this forum earlier, however, and read about a school called Andrews. I was just wondering what the difference was between the degrees that are offered at Kaplan and Andrews and if anyone on the forum has graduated from Kaplan or is in their program and what they thought of the program and if they were abled to get hired right away or not.

I can't stand doing MT anymore. I applied and have received Pell grants, yay! Now, I need to decide on my major. I want to be in a career where I can help people. I'm thinking social work or psychology. But I keep seeing jobs where they say "BA in Human Services needed." Wouldn't this just be social work? ...
Im so confused, I keep reading on different forums on line how hard it can be to break into medical coding.
Does having an AA degree help? Is that a plus? I see some on line colleges that are accredited offer AA degrees, AABS degrees, etc.....whats the difference?
Is it better for a newbie to go straight to AHIMA and take their cluster of courses or take an on line billing class through one of the on-line universities, then go test at AHIMA and AAPC? ...
Interesting post on the coding board about this, so I thought I would mention it here.
If you have a bachelors degree in any subject, you can qualify to take the RHIA exam by completing a postbaccalaureate certificate program in health information administration that is accredited by AHIMA. That opens up a lot of job opportunities. You should have little trouble with a program like that because of your healthcare background.
There are only a few of those programs and some are extre ...
In researching an HIT degree, I have mostly come across job descriptions that include coding. I am currently a medical transcriptionist and jobs are now being shipped off shore. Are coding jobs being shipped off shore as well? And, if so, what would the benefit be of a degree in Health Information Techology? What jobs are available other than coding and medical records? ...
so very confused now. wanted to sign up for AHIMA but now i read this on their site.
Step One: Education
Step one begins with a college education. You need to complete either an associate or bachelor's degree program in health information management offered at over 200 colleges and universities across the country. For a listing of accredited programs, click here. ...
So, if one is looking for a different MTSO employer, what's the competition like? Is CMT pretty much a given now? I mean, do I have to find the funds to pay for that and get the title just to be part of the competition? NEED ADVISE PLEASE ...
Very, very difficulty to listen to her prattle on about the importance of audits and quality when she could not begin to do what I do. I can take it from the corporate suits who run this company because after all, they are NOT in the business of transcription, they are in the business of technology and we MTs are only in their ways and a very hard to swallow means to an end or at least to India..but I would hope that the person who DIRECTLY supervises me and MY work should know how to perf ...
I need to buy a medical spell checker and the Quick Look Drug Book. I'm planning to buy them both from Stedman's. Does anyone know of a better place to buy the items. Also, should I get the CD Rom, or am I okay with the downloads? Thanks for any help. ...
I've started trying to understand it. I see lots of software programs out there that supposedly handle this. But if there are multiple programs, how does all the various work put into these programs end up in ONE (!?) place where a persons medical record can be accessed by any medical professional? Or is my understanding already flawed?
Will those MDs, or whoever, that choose to continue the narrative dictation (vs point and click or fill in the blanks) can they con ...
Have been on E5 for a year and unable maintain 186 lph. This is the first time in my 20+ years as an MT that it has been so hard to reach the required lines. Today I forced myself to sit in the chair and moved only to go to the bathroom a couple times, and a 1-minute stretch every hour (timed). Still only managed about 170 lph. The audio is pretty bad on my accounts, but still never had a problem with lines with poor audio at prior jobs. I do tend to double-listen now when there is a hitch in th ...
