I did not realize these criteria meant you could not remarry?

The bottom line is that just because someone has a husband and a house that is paid for does not mean they do not need an income nor is it fair to ask that person to step aside. To wish bad on someone simply because they budgeted their money and have a spouse is just wrong. End of story.
