Having been through years of typing difficult dictations (either heavy accents or jackrabbit speed), learning curves for new typing platforms or other software changes, making templates for dictations, improving my personal shortcuts, having to consult with my supervisor on the phone, doing google research for new terminology or meds etc, and other time-suckers, I would personally not hesitate to charge an hourly rate. Then you know what you will be making all of the time. You just have to be self disciplined and keep good track of your time. That way, you never get short-changed, which is all too easy when charging by the line or page or report. IMO
