Getting newborns home safe and sound

As we transition records to digital format in Cerner, feedback from providers is essential to ensuring theElectronic Health Record (EHR) will do the job of making healthcare safe and effective for our patients. Beginning in early 2019, our Family Medicine Resident physicians worked to streamline the process of newborn discharges through improvements in the EHR.

While reviewing the newborn discharge process, DO, resident physician II, andMD, faculty, both of Family Medicine and Residency, shared updates with fellow residents, which included streamlining the newborn physical exam and summary at discharge. To accomplish this, they suggested usingquick texts, which are loadable templates that save clinicians important time when updating medical records.

MD, FAAFP, senior vice president and senior physician executive, praises the initiative and feedback provided by our clinicians, “This is an excellent example of a provider-driven improvement of patient care using our EHR.”

Thank you to the entire team caring for our newborns. By working together, they uncovered quality improvements to a tool that gives our smallest patients an advantage as they leave our care.
