My problem with VDI/Nuance - sm Posted: Aug 6th, 2018 - 5:22 pm
Apparently, my problem is that I don't have a problem with VDI. By not having a problem with it and stating how I feel I'm also slapping people in the face.
I've also learned that my opinions are invalid and abusive because I'm married, successful at my MT job, happy, and own more than 1 computer.
These are the reasons I don't have a problem with VDI (reposted because the thread was deleted):
* Nuance wants to install and run anti-virus on my PC any time they choose.
-- Go for it. That means I don't have to worry about running my own anti-virus. I don't have to worry if a free AV is good enough and I don't have to spend money on a paid solution.
* Nuance wants me to spend 2 hours unpaid while they install the software and configure the PC.
-- I'm not happy about this. But it is what it is. I've had other IC jobs and have never been paid for installation and setup time.
* Nuance wants to invade my privacy.
-- It's a separate PC used only for work. I have nothing private there. I've always worked this way. We have a "family PC" for the kids. A Dad/Mom PC for the bills, banking, and online purchases. And my work PC. I don't trust any of these companies and I don't want them to trust me. As an IC I have a certain amount of legal liability if there's a breach. I keep my work PC separate so I can respond as needed if a problem arises.
* Nuance wants me to take responsibility for any issues or damage their software causes to my PC.
-- Yep. So does everyone else in the software industry. Even if Nuance didn't do this I don't have any way to prove their software caused a problem. I have a backup and I know how to do a factory restore. I'm not worried about my PC.
* The contract Nuance wants me to sign is intrusive and aggressive.
-- Yep. I'm keeping a copy of it and I will follow it to the letter. If there's a breach, I'm blaming Nuance. They want permission to maintain the security of my PC. So be it. That's one less thing for me to worry about. I also plan to contact them at the first sign of any issues with an update or a virus scan.
* Nuance is scum, lying, cheating, wage thieves, etc.
-- If I agreed with this statement I wouldn't be taking work from them or their affiliate, would I? If that's truly how you feel about them I guess you won't be working with Nuance. To each his own.
* The 12-minute login time.
-- Surprisingly enough, 12-15 minutes is exactly how long it takes me to chat a bit with the family while getting coffee. If there's enough time left after that I'll scan the headlines for the news of the day.
