web design - how to get started

Here's a copy of what I posted on one of the other boards recently. To answer about getting clients: You can freelance, work at home, or work for a company.

A lot of our skills translate, you can absolutely study on your own for free (it's highly recommended by pros), there is a high demand, and it pays well. I started with a fabulous, fun, thorough book, Head First html and css, and from there to freeCodeCamp. I'm loving every minute of it, working a bunch of IC jobs to get me through until I'm ready to go. I started last May and by stealing a few hours here and there I learned enough in 9 months that I was told I could get a job, but I want to be really ready, so I'm going to keep learning for a while. A really nice fringe benefit is I know sooo much more about PCs, the internet and solving tech problems. It may not be "for everyone," but it is definitely doable, if you really want out and you're really willing to work and learn. Look at an online sample of that book, or go to w3schools.com and try a few web tutorial lessons (short little lessons, free, you don't even have to sign up, just go to the page and have at it)to see exactly how fun, exciting and sort of easy it is -- it's all one little step at a time. Do the book and go to freeCodeCamp and you'll have a literal world of people to network with and learn from. If you try w3school you will be creating a page from the first lesson -- how cool is that? I kicked myself around the world when I realized I could have done this a decade ago. You don't have to be a tech genius to get work doing this; there are people earning money at design who don't know half what I do right now, but the ones who know how to do it right get much better jobs. And doing it right only means starting at the beginning and learning how and why things work instead of using DIY gadgets to fake it. Computers are like parrots; they only know what you tell them, and you tell them in little pieces. With Notepad, you already have the basic tool, no need to buy anything. The first book is the only thing I've paid for so far (a whole $14). Email me if you want to know more or need study help.
